In opposition to Chomsky, who(as I noted) pays little attention to how his derivations might be realized by an individual speaker operating under "real-world" constraints, Bresnan and her colleagues have fashioned a perspective designed to illuminate how an individual will perceive or produce language. In her lexical-functional theory, there is no transformational component. The information traditionally embedded in the syntactic components is now placed in the individual' s lexicon-one's knowledge of specific words. Lexical-functional grammar provides each sentence with two structures : a constituent structure, which is similar to a surface structure(or phrase-marker tree) in the standard theory of Chomsky; and a functional structure, which includes all the grammatical relations relevant to the semantic interpretation of the sentence. The functional structure is generated by annotated phrase-structure rules working in conjunction with lexical entries for the various morphemes in a sentence. 1, record 1, English, - lexical%2Dfunctional%20theory

A standard medical approach, indeed a common lay-person's approach, to thinking about disability involves viewing it as a problem that exists in a person's body. As a consequence, that individual is thought to require treatment or care to fix the disability, to approximate normal functioning, or perhaps as a last measure, to help the individual adapt and learn to function despite the disability. So construed, disability is primarily an individual' s medical problem in need of treatment.... this medical model of disability holds that "a person's functional limitations(impairments) are the root cause of any disadvantages experienced and these disadvantages can therefore only be rectified by treatment or cure. While the concept of disruptive coloration has been standard textbook material... with applications ranging from military uniforms and equipment to art..., empirical verification of the functional mechanism underlying disruptive coloration has remained elusive for two main reasons. First, disruptive coloration invariably occurs in conjunction with background matching, so disentangling their individual contributions to camouflage is therefore challenging... Second, disruptive coloration is best defined in terms of its function(impairing recognition) rather than its appearance... 4, record 4, English, - disruptive%20coloration

You are likely to find it difficult to interpret the clinical importance of an effect size(if the weighted average effect is one-half of a standard deviation, is this effect clinically trivial, or is it large?). Once again, you should look for a presentation of the results that conveys their pratical importance(for example by translating the summary effect size back into natural units [3715]). For instance, if clinicians have become familiar with the significance of differences in walk test scores in patients with chronic lung disease, the effect size of a treatment on a number of mesures of functional status(such as the walk test and stair climbing) can be converted back into differences in walk test scores. 1, record 15, English, - summary%20effect%20size
