In opposition to Chomsky, who(as I noted) pays little attention to how his derivations might be realized by an individual speaker operating under "real-world" constraints, Bresnan and her colleagues have fashioned a perspective designed to illuminate how an individual will perceive or produce language. In her lexical-functional theory, there is no transformational component. The information traditionally embedded in the syntactic components is now placed in the individual' s lexicon-one's knowledge of specific words. Lexical-functional grammar provides each sentence with two structures : a constituent structure, which is similar to a surface structure(or phrase-marker tree) in the standard theory of Chomsky; and a functional structure, which includes all the grammatical relations relevant to the semantic interpretation of the sentence. The functional structure is generated by annotated phrase-structure rules working in conjunction with lexical entries for the various morphemes in a sentence. 1, record 1, English, - lexical%2Dfunctional%20theory

Cultural discontinuity refers to the lack of cohesion between two or more cultures. Upon entry into school, differences in the functional use of language among culturally and linguistically diverse children have been found to account for the discontinuity they experience. Because children come to school socialized to language in culture-specific ways, the discourse structure and communication styles used by many children from culturally and linguistically diverse populations is incongruent with that of the teacher's style of interaction. This discontinuity between home and school language socialization patterns can have a negative impact on academic achievement. 1, record 5, English, - cultural%20discontinuity

By orienting and networking such wires, nano-circuitry can potentially be created, which may be of value in the computer industry. The nanostructures can also be incorporated into coatings with optical, electric, magnetic, catalytic, or enzymatic moieties as functional units. A nanoarray is a nanoscale or microscale ordered arrangement of nanotemplates and/or nanostructures. A nanoarray, therefore comprises an ordered array of nanostructures. A nanoarray can have any type of long range packing symmetry, including 2-, 3-, 4-, or 6-fold packing symmetry. The nanoarray can be a one-dimensional structure, a two-dimensional array, or a three-dimensional array. In a specific embodiment, where the nanoparticles are dielectrics, a three-dimensional nanoarray can be a photonic bandgap crystal. Optimal conditions for assembly and crystallization of a nanoarray... are easily determined by routine experimentation, such as by changing each variable individually and monitoring formation of the appropriate products. 3, record 10, English, - nanoarray

All... amino acids... except proline have as common denominators a free carboxyl group and a free unsubstituted amino group on the [alpha] carbon atom. They differ from each other in the structure of their distinctive side chains, called the R groups.... The characteristic organic reactions of amino acids are those of their functional groups, i. e., the carboxyl groups, the [alpha] amino groups, and the functional groups present in the different side chains.... The carboxyl groups of all amino acids undergo well-known organic reactions leading to the formation of amides, esters, and acid halides.... Esterification of amino acids with ethanol or benzyl alcohol is often used as a means of protecting the carboxyl group of amino acids in the chemical synthesis of peptides. 3, record 15, English, - carboxyl%20group

4, record 15, French, - carboxyle

The Common Berthing Mechanism(CBM) is a functional structure that is used to connect the components of the International Space Station(except the Russian modules).... A CBM is composed of two parts, an active CBM that uses an electric motor to make connection, and a passive CBM. To connect these two parts, an astronaut first uses the robot arm to grapple the module on which the passive CBM is attached and move it close to the active CBM. A limit switch located on the active CBM senses when the passive CBM is close enough to the active CBM and generates a signal indicating that preparation for berthing is completed. Next, the active CBM extends four capture latches to catch the passive CBM. The 16 power bolts then extend from the active CBM and are inserted into the holes of the passive CBM, completing the connection. When the pressurized modules are connected, a big O-ring seal made of special rubber will seal the CBMs to maintain air-tightness inside the connected modules. 2, record 24, English, - common%20berthing%20mechanism

In this groundwork for a biospheric systems ethics, human beings as well as historical communities qualify for the attribution of intrinsic value. That does not mean, however, that all things in the biospheric environment so qualify. Significantly, natural systems are not the only kind of entities we find in our world. There is a multitude of atoms and molecules that are not integrated in the functional structure of living systems and of the biosphere : they make up the atmosphere and the oceans, the rivers, lakes, soils, mountains and deserts of the globe. Together with the Sun-which provides the free energy that drives the planet's life processes-they constitute the physical environment of the biosphere and its subsystems. 1, record 27, English, - biospheric%20environment

Several proteins or parts of proteins that do not have homologous sequences are observed to adopt a similar tertiary arrangement of packed [alpha]-helices and [beta]-strands.... Generally, it is an open question whether the similarity of tertiary structures arises by convergent evolution to a structural and/or functional favourable conformation or by divergence during which sequence homologies have been lost.... Combined with the search for key amino acid residues, it is likely that structural similarity will be recognized by comparing profiles of secondary structure predictions and by using empirical rules governing the packing of [alpha]-helices and [beta]-strands. 1, record 33, English, - beta%2Dstrand

For occasions when a student wants to understand the structure of a control component in details, STEAMER has a facility called the feedback minilab(Forbus, 1984a), where simulated devices can be assembled and tested. On the minilab's screen, the student has a menu of icons representing abstract functions typical of control devices, such as measuring subcomponents or comparators. She can select these abstract components and assemble them on the screen to construct her own control devices. The minilab is then able to generate code from subcomponent specifications to produce a simulation program for the device. Hence, once a controller has been constructed graphically in this way, it can be integrated into a simulation so that its effects on the embedding system can be observed. As implemented, the minilab has limited tutorial capabilities : it can critique the student's device by locating common bugs and recognizing some instances of known devices. Its pedagogical significance lies in its definition of abstract components in terms that allows simulated devices to be built. It is very important for students to acquire this vocabulary of functional abstractions, and the minilab helps root the abstractions’ meaning in direct experiments. 1, record 34, English, - feedback%20minilab

Moins spécifique, le terme "transformation" réfère d'abord aux changements d'aspect ou de forme, mais l'usage lui accorde un sens très large qui englobe entre autres, les notions de "conversion" et de "modernisation". 1, record 41, French, - remodelage
