Local interactions between nearby amino acids give rise to alpha helixes, beta sheets or other forms of secondary structure. These subassemblies, acting as more or less coherent units, organize themselves into domains. The geometric arrangement of the domains constitutes the tertiary structure. The presence of the same secondary structures and domains in many dissimilar proteins argues that they are not mere artificial abstractions introduced by the biochemist; on the contrary, they seem to be fundamental units in the evolution and diversification of proteins. Many proteins have a level of organization beyond the tertiary structure. They are composed of multiple polypeptide strands held together by a variety of weak bonds and sometimes further cemented by disulfide linkages. 1, record 3, English, - tertiary%20structure

A clinoform is a seaward-dipping surface of a prograding sediment body that consists of a gently dipping topset, a steeply dipping foreset, and a gently dipping bottomset. The topset consists of fluvial and subaqueous environments coupled at the shoreline. Clinoforms are ubiquitous in modern depositional systems and are the fundamental constructional units of stratigraphic sequences. 3, record 6, English, - clinoform

In 1951 John L. Rich was the first to propose that the depositional settings of sediment accumulation on the shelf, slope, and bottom be (1) unda for shallow water overlying the shelf, (2) clino for the deeper water overlying the slope, and (3) fondo for the deepest water covering the bottom of the basin (Friedman (2001). Rich suggested the terms (1) undaform for any surface underlying an unda environment; (2) clinoform for any surface underlying a clino environment; (3) fondoform for any surface underlying a fondo environment. ... Following this approach Mitchum (1977) proposed that clinoform surface be used for the sloping depositional surface that is commonly associated with strata prograding into deep water. 4, record 6, English, - clinoform

The speed of light in a vacuum is an important physical constant denoted by the letter c for "constant" or the Latin word "celeritas" meaning "swiftness". It is the speed of all electromagnetic radiations, including visible light, in a vacuum. More generally, it is the speed of anything having zero rest mass.... In metric units, the speed of light is exactly 299, 792, 458 metres per second(1, 079, 252, 848. 8 km/h). The fundamental SI unit of length, the metre, has been defined since October 21, 1983, as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299, 792, 458 of a second; any increase in the precision of the measurement of the speed of light would refine the definition of the metre, but not alter the numerical value of c. The approximate value of 3x108 m/s is commonly used in rough estimates. In imperial units, the speed of light is about 670, 616, 629. 2 miles per hour or 983, 571, 056 feet per second, which is about 186, 282, 397 miles per second, or roughly one foot per nanosecond. The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium. 5, record 8, English, - speed%20of%20light

One preoccupation of the Greeks was known as quadrature, or squaring : finding the area of a closed shape in the plane. The word quadrature refers to the nature of the problem : to express the area of any shape in terms of units of area-that is, squares. To the Greeks that meant the given shape had to be transformed into an equivalent one whose area could be found from fundamental principles.... The quadrature of any polygon follows immediately, because a polygon can always be dissected into triangles. Among the more intriguing... problems of mathematics has been the squaring of curved figures. 2, record 12, English, - quadrature

1, record 12, French, - quadrature

Since temporal resolution is of fundamental importance in the processing of visually presented information... it was thought that changes in visuo-temporal mediation produced by videotext would have appreciable effects on subsequent visual performance.(H.
