In 1970, the Ford Foundation initiated the Drug Abuse Survey Project to pinpoint more precisely what should be done to combat drug abuse. Its final report, Dealing with Drug Abuse..., analyzed in detail the great gaps in basic knowledge of drug actions within the body, psychological factors involved in deciding to use drugs, and the role of drugs in contemporary American society; it also made a strong appeal for more research. The report's practical outcome was the creation of the Drug Abuse Council(DAC), which funded studies on illicit drug abuse from 1971 until 1978.

The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MERIS forms part of the core instrument payload of ESA's environmental research satellite ENVISAT-1. MERIS is funded by ESA. The demands of the European scientific community for a global environmental monitoring system, whose technical characteristics enable the extraction of quantitative information from ocean colour data, as well as for documentation of the state and evolution of the atmosphere and land surfaces, led to the conception of MERIS. The oceanographic mission is radiometrically the most demanding in terms of low radiance levels and their associated high signal-to-noise ratios. The instrument will be capable of detecting the low levels of radiation emerging from the ocean(linked to the water constituents by the processes of absorption and scattering), in addition to acquiring information about the atmospheric medium through which the observation is made as well as terrestrial environments. The characteristics of MERIS will also be of great value for the retrieval of information on land surfaces, in particular that of global biomass.

These sensors with nearly global daily coverage employ visible wavelength channels of observation with spectral characteristics suited for water quality monitoring of turbid lakes and coastal regions. Turbidity is one of the essential water quality indicators as it describes, in practise, the integrated amount of algae biomass and suspended matter.

The National Enterprise Board(NEB) was a government body set up in the United Kingdom in 1975 to implement the Wilson Labour government's objective of extending public ownership of industry. The plans were outlined in the 1974 White Paper The Regeneration of British Industry and the Industry Act 1975 enacted these measures, establishing the NEB. In 1981, the NEB was combined with the National Research Development Corporation(NRDC) to form the British Technology Group(BTG). The NRDC had been founded in 1948 by Atlee's Labour government to commercialise British publicly funded research.

A Project by the International Development Research Center(IDRC). "Quick access to medical information is essential for quality patient care, medical research, and monitoring health trends. But in many parts of the developing world, obtaining information has been difficult, if not impossible, due to poor communications infrastructure, economic conditions, or disasters. This information gap has been reduced thanks to a reliable, inexpensive health information system called HealthNet. Today HealthNet provides health-care professionals even in remote areas of the South with medical information that was previously unattainable. The network is active in more than 30 developing nations(including 22 African countries), with more countries scheduled to join in the near future. Partly funded by IDRC, HealthNet uses radio-and telephone-based computer networks and a low-earth-orbit satellite to transfer medical information from one part of the world to developing countries and vice versa.

In 1990 a research project was funded by the Commission of the European Communities, within the frame of the funding programme EPOCH with the aim of evaluating the possibility of such integration. It capitalizes on the special strengths and expertise of researchers, educators, policy makers, business and community leaders. Together, the partners will look synergistically at the extensive education, training and retraining Canadians will need to participate successfully in the evolving knowledge-based global economy. The network will provide decision makers with better information on which to base education policies and programs. EvNet is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

The program has funded the development of new program models, training and public education materials.
