The Community Health Programs(CHP) Directorate [Health Canada] is a participant and funder in Regional Health Surveys carried out by First Nations and Inuit. The survey process was designed to have both cultural credibility and scientific rigour. Control and ownership of the surveys rest with First Nations under a National Steering Committee that includes representatives from regional and national First Nations organizations. Core subjects include children's health, health services, tobacco use, medical conditions(including diabetes), disability, residential schools, wellness and dental health. Since each region controls its own surveys, questions are added to address regional needs, interests or special concerns.
