This program has been made possible through a funding partnership with Human Resources Development Canada(HRDC). Aboriginal people interested in a career with the RCMP who do not meet the basic entrance requirements, but otherwise would be suitable candidates are enrolled as cadets on the ACDP. Following a three week assessment period at Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan, the cadets return to a detachment in their home area(usually) with a program designed to assist them to address identified shortcomings. The cadets receive an allowance, and have up to two years to attain the basic entrance requirements; once successful they proceed to Regina to undergo basic cadet training. In New Brunswick and in British Columbia the federal government is funding the Self-Sufficiency Project, a controlled experiment designed to determine the effectiveness of an earnings supplement for single-parent social assistance recipients who take jobs and agree to leave social assistance. The intervention being tested is a limited temporary supplementation of participants’ earned incomes for a three year period in order to support the transition from welfare to work.
