The Swan River Indian and Metis Association was first formed in 1961 and incorporated in 1969 as the Swan River Indian and Metis Friendship Centre. After the original building at 503 Main St. was destroyed by fire in 1969, the Centre moved to rented space. November 15th, 1972 capital funds were secured from the Secretary of State to purchase an existing building at 723 Main St. In May 1990, the Friendship Centre purchased and renovated another building. September 10th, 1990 the grand opening took place to celebrate the opening of the present building at 1413 Main St. East.
