FUNDUS AUTOFLUORESCENCE [3 records]

Record 1 2026-02-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • The Eye
CONT

... fundus autofluorescence(FAF) imaging, which detects autofluorescent material, i. e., lipofuscin, in the retinal pigment epithelium(RPE). Fluorophores detectable with this imaging method may also occur anterior or posterior to the RPE cell monolayer. Excessive lipofuscin accumulation in the RPE is a common downstream pathogenic pathway in various monogenetic and complex retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration. The accumulated lipofuscin produces a signal that is captured in the FAF image allowing in vivo mapping of metabolic changes in the RPE.

OBS

CONT

Near-infrared reflectance(NIR) imaging is a noninvasive, noncontact, and rapid in vivo examination currently extensively available for ophthalmologists.... the technique enables visualizing subretinal alterations located in the retinal photoreceptor layer, the retinal pigmented epithelium(RPE), and choroid. The basis is a long excitation wavelength([approximately] 820 nm [nanometres] diode laser) that penetrates the optic media and enables visualizing the retina and choroid in detail. Changes in reflection and absorption of light through retinal tissues enhance visualization of structures beneath the retinal pigment epithelium(RPE) and melanin. Images often correlate with blue-light fundus autofluorescence(FAF) ;however, NIR demonstrates superiority in revealing sub-RPE lesions.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Visual Disorders
CONT

Autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy.... Biaellic mutations in BEST1 are associated with a distinct retinopathy characterized by central visual loss, an absent EOG [electrooculogram] light-rise, and a reduced EOG. Yellowish blunt retinal deposits may be confused with an inflammatory uveitis-like condition, but FAF [fundus autofluorescence] reveals them to be hyperfluorescent.

CONT

Autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB). Typical age of onset in ARB is in the first decade but can be as late as the fifth decade.

CONT
