FUNGUS INFECTIONS [3 records]

CONT

The rice blast disease is caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea, which, in its sexual state, is known as Magnaporthe grisea. The disease can strike all aerial parts of the plant. Most infections occur on the leaves, causing diamond-shaped lesions with a gray or white center to appear, or on the panicles, which turn white and die before being filled with grain. P. grisea is highly specific to rice, although certain strains that don’t attack rice can harm weeds in the rice field. Once on a rice plant, the fungus rapidly produces thousands of spores, which are carried readily through the air, by wind or rain, onto neighboring plants.

CONT

CONT

Apple cork spot, bitter pit and Jonathan spot are physiological disorders that can affect apple quality and reduce visual appeal. Fruit growers sometimes confuse these disorders with damage resulting from insects or pathological diseases, particularly those involving fungus infections or hail injury.... Although apples affected with these disorders are edible, the unattractive external appearance often arouses consumer concern and reduces salability of fruit.

OBS

Occurrence of cork spot and bitter pit appears to be related to reduced calcium availability in the developing fruit.

Downy mildew of grape can be a serious disease in ... vineyards. This fungus disease develops whenever weather during the growing season is moist and temperatures are cool to moderate. The downy mildew fungus attacks leaves, fruit, shoots and tendrils. The disease may cause premature defoliation in mid to late summer that results in a weakening of the plant and reduced sugar content of the fruit.

OBS

On leaves, young infections appear as very small, greenish-yellow, translucent spots that are difficult to see. With time, the lesions enlarge and a white moldy growth composed of fungus threads(mycelium) and spores form on the undersides of the leaves. If lesions are numerous they may merge and cover most of the leaf. Infected leaves eventually turn brown, become dry and drop. Exposed berries may be scalded by the sun. If vines are defoliated before the ripening period, grapes may not mature normally.

CONT
