A low-elevation wind associated with gaps or low elevation areas in mountainous terrain, including flow through valleys and canyons and among peaks. 2, record 2, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Gap winds can range in width from hundreds of feet to over one hundred miles, and in unusual circumstances can be associated with strong winds exceeding 50 knots. These winds are normally quite shallow, extending hundreds of feet to a few thousand feet above the surface, with large changes of wind, or wind shear, at their upper and lateral boundaries. Gap winds are generally strongest when there is a large pressure drop across a gap, although there is one class of gap wind that does not depend on a pressure gradient across the gap. 3, record 2, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Although physicially plausible, the venturi mechanism appears to be at odds with most real gap wind situations, where the strongest winds are generally over the exit region of the gap, not at the narrowest section or constriction. There are a number of reasons for the failure of the funnel model. First, there is no rigid lid in the real world.... Another reason the flow tend to be strongest in the gap exit region is that there is often a synoptic or mesoscale pressure gradient across the gap. 4, record 2, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
[The term "gap wind"] was introduced by R. S. Scorer (1952) for the surface winds blowing through the Strait of Gibraltar. ... Similar winds occur at other gaps in mountain ranges, such as the tehuantepecer and the jochwinde, and in long channels, such as the Strait of Juan de Fuca between the Olympic Mountains of Washington and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. 5, record 2, English, - gap%20wind

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 3 OBS

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Outflow winds occur when differing air masses are separated by a coastal mountain barrier. Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
4, record 4, French, - vent%20de%20terre
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS
1, record 4, French, - vent%20de%20terre

[The National Weather Services uses]... a "Standard Rain Gage"(SRG) [consisting] of a funnel 8 inches in diameter, leading to a tube inside the gage. The inside tube can hold up to 2 inches of rain; any excess will flow into the main container to be measured after the inside tube is emptied. The rainfall is measured using a specially calibrated dipstick. During the winter, the funnel and inside tube are removed; snow falls into the main container, and then is melted to determine the liquid equivalent of the snowfall. 8, record 5, English, - standard%20raingauge

The Universal [rain gauge] is a weighing type of gauge with mechanical linkages that lead to a pen on a strip-chart. In the NWS [National Weather Services], the gauge orifice has usually been 8 inches in diameter. The gauge is used in all seasons and has an antifreeze-type solution so the snow in winter melts and is added to the total liquid. ... The Standard Rain Gauge (SRG) is similar to the Universal in diameter but is simply a can that collects precipitation to be read manually. Both the Universal and the SRG could be considered a standard gauge with an 8 inch diameter. 3, record 5, English, - standard%20raingauge

It consists of a copper funnel, about 30-cm long with a 15-cm diameter at the top, which has a 10-mesh screen over half its diameter to remove debris and a 6-mm-diameter exit tube at the bottom through which the rate of flow is timed. It takes 26 seconds for a quart of clean water to flow through and correspondingly longer for muds of greater viscosity. Gel strength is measured by comparing the rate of flow of freshly agitated mud with that which has been allowed to remain quiescent for 10 minutes. 3, record 6, English, - Marsh%20funnel
