The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground(in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity. Red River log construction is yet another Metis contribution to the development of Canada. 2, record 34, English, - Red%20River%20frame%20construction

The Legend of the Dream Catcher tells us that the Native American Indians believe that the night air is filled with dreams, both good and bad. The dream catcher is woven of willow, antler, bones, feathers, sinew, bits or fur, leaves and other things of nature. The dream catcher, when hung above an infant's cradle or a place of rest, swinging freely with the breeze, catches the dreams as they enter the life of the dreamer. The good dreams know the way, slipping through the outer holes and sliding down the soft feathers so gently into the peaceful slumbering sleeper. The bad dreams, however, not knowing the way, would get tangled in the web, perishing with the first light of the new day. 3, record 80, English, - dream%20catcher

[Description of a North American Aboriginal costume displayed at the British Museum :] War shirt, leggings, head-dress and moccasins. Blackfoot, around AD 1840-1860. From Alberta or Montana, North America. Various items of the Blackfoot costume. The war shirt is decorated with painted designs including Thunderbirds, bison heads, horses, and tadpoles, probably representing a combination of religious images relating to specific exploits of the owner... The tadpoles, also depicted down the leggings, may represent war wounds. Large amounts of ermine or weasel fur have been used on the leggings, this animal being considered the most dangerous, for its size, by the Blackfoot.

1, record 91, French, - bannique

Fur seals are any of nine species of pinnipeds in the Otariidae family. One species, the northern fur seal(Callorhinus ursinus) inhabits the North Pacific, while seven species in the Arctocephalus genus are found primarily in the Southern hemisphere. They are much more closely related to sea lions than true seals, and share with them external ears(pinnae), relatively long and muscular foreflippers, and the ability to walk on all fours. They are marked by their dense underfur, which made them a long-time object of commercial hunting. 3, record 95, English, - fur%20seal

We have examined phylogenetic and geographic patterns of variation in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of Southern Hemisphere fur seals(Arctocephalus spp.). Our survey of 106 individuals from four putative species reveals three distinct patterns of variation reflecting ancient, recent historic, and contemporary gene flow. For the combined samples of Subantarctic(Arctocephalus tropicalis) and Antarctic(Arctocephalus gazella) fur seals, we find low levels of sequence diversity and reciprocal paraphyly of hapiotypes(where representative haplotypes of a species are found to occur infrequently in another species and vice versa). 4, record 95, English, - fur%20seal

According to Terry Smythe, Historical Research Division, Parks Canada, "chief trader" is a term used by the Hudson's Bay Company to refer to a rank of company officer. After 1821, fur traders in charge of the posts were given shares and made officers. In order of rank the officers were known as "chief factors", "chief traders" and "post masters". 3, record 100, English, - chief%20trader
