Bindin is an adhesive protein that mediates the binding of sea urchin sperm to the egg during fertilization. Bindin selectively associates with gel-phase phospholipid vesicles in a peripheral fashion. Bindin interacts specifically with sulfated furan on the egg's surface, and directly with the phospholipid bilayer of the sperm. Analysis of a series of deletion mutants of recombinant bindin was undertaken to define the membrane associating domain of bindin. Recombinant and sperm bindin display nearly identical binding kinetics to gel-phase phospholipids and have equivalent saturation points of approx. 250 lipid molecules per molecule of bindin [Source : PASCAL database].

Limonoids are phytochemicals, abundant in citrus fruit and other plants of the classes Rutaceae and Miliaceae. They account for the scent of fresh lemon or orange peel. Many of the plants used in traditional healing such as Neem, are rich in limonoids. Currently limonoids are under investigation for a wide variety of therapeutic effects such as antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antineoplastic and antimalarial. They also show effectiveness as insecticides both in traditional farming cultures and modern biochemistry labs. Chemically, the limonoids consist of variations of the furanolactone core structure. The prototypical structure consists of 4 six-membered rings and a furan ring. Limonoinds are classed as tetranortriterpenes.

  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
DEF

An organic compound of the aromatic class.

DEF

Any of a large class of organic compounds including benzene and compounds that resemble benzene in chemical properties.

CONT

Aromatic compounds contain unusually stable ring structures, often made up of six carbon atoms arranged hexagonally. Some of the compounds, however, have rings with more or fewer atoms, not necessarily all carbon. Furan, for example, has a ring with four atoms of carbon and one of oxygen. Also, two or more rings can be fused, as in naphthalene. The characteristic properties of the class, notably the stability of the compounds, derive from the fact that aromatic rings permit the sharing of some electrons by all the atoms of the ring, which increases the strength of the bonds.

OBS

"Aromatic," as a noun, is often used in the plural form to designate the group of compounds.

DEF

The resonance-stabilized ring characteristic of aromatic organic compounds.

CONT

Most aromatic rings are planar six-membered rings(e. g., benzene or pyridine) or planar five-membered rings containing a hetero atom with an unshared electron pair(e. g,, furan or pyrrole). Although aromatic rings are unsaturated, they do not undergo the addition reactions characteristic of alkenes; instead, aromatic compounds are characterized by substitution reactions. Many organic compounds, such as naphthalene and purine, contain several aromatic rings fused together.

OBS

It appears that human, because of the course of evolution, do not have biochemical ability to synthesize the benzene ring. As a result, phenylalanine and tryptophan derivatives are essential in the human diet.
