FURNACE ROOF [13 records]

Record 1 2016-02-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Furnaces and Ovens (Metallurgy)
  • Processing of Mineral Products
DEF

A furnace, with a shallow hearth, usually non-regenerative, having a roof that deflects the flame and radiates heat toward the hearth or the surface of the charge. Firing may be with coal, pulverized coal, oil, or gas. Two of the most important types are the open-hearth steel furnaces and the large reverberatories employed in copper smelting.

Key term(s)

French

Domaine(s)
  • Fours (Métallurgie)
  • Préparation des produits miniers
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Furnaces and Ovens (Metallurgy)

Record 4 2000-02-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Combustion and Fuels (Fireplaces)
  • Burners and Steamfitting
DEF

Combustion air introduced over the burner flame to enhance completeness of combustion.

CONT

In the dutch oven configuration, fuel is introduced through the roof of the dutch oven and forms a conical pile which burns on the surface and around the edges. Primary preheated over fire air is admitted above the pile, with secondary air introduced in the furnace area to burn volatiles driven off in the dutch oven area.

CONT

The introduction of air from a blower or fan into the combustion chamber after the oil has left the [burner] nozzle is referred to as secondary air.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Combustion et combustibles (Foyers)
  • Fumisterie et brûleurs
DEF

CONT

Exterior hoods are suction openings located adjacent to open sources of contamination. This type of hood removes contaminants by creating controlled air currents that capture and draw the contaminants into the duct system. The shape and size of the capture zone (the area into which contaminants are drawn) is determined by the design of the hood and the rate of airflow. Examples of these hoods include side draft hoods, slot hoods, downdraft hoods and exhaust ducts located close to the source.

OBS

A design often employed. This unit is located on the side of the roof(furnace roof), close to the electrodes to procure a lateral type of control. An overhead hood at the charging door is often used with the side hood.

CONT

The dutch oven is essentially a refractory lined combustion furnace which is attached to the package boiler. The dutch oven, up until a short time ago, was one of the most common methods of burning bark. The dutch oven is still used in certain cases when large quantities of bark are to be burned, when the moisture content is very high, and when the fuel has not been hogged to the normal size required for a grate. In the dutch oven configuration, fuel is introduced through the roof of the dutch oven and forms a conical pile which burns on the surface and around the edges.

CONT
