On la faisait aussi glisser entre les draps d'un lit pour les réchauffer. En Amérique, le terme s'applique aussi au système de chauffage d'une voiture et à un appareil portatif servant à réchauffer une pièce. La plupart des ouvrages spécialisés n'acceptent pas ces deux derniers sens mais lui préfèrent respectivement «chauffage» et «radiateur». Ainsi, s'il fait trop froid dans une pièce, vous faites fonctionner un radiateur d'appoint, en plus du radiateur intégré au système de chauffage (baseboard heater).

Furnace in which the circulating air flows horizontally with the air inlet and discharge openings at opposite ends of the casing.

The horizontal furnace has the blower located beside the heat exchanger with the air entering one end, traveling horizontally through the blower and over the heat exchanger and discharging out the opposite end. Such furnaces are used for locations with limited head room, such as attics or crawl spaces below floors or suspended under the ceiling. These units are often designed so that the components may be rearranged to allow installation with air flow from left to right or from right to left.

Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house.
