When foveal detachment occurs in eyes with MF [myopic foveoschisis], surgery is necessary to prevent further deterioration. Vitrectomy and complete ILM peeling have been suggested to flatten the retina, but postoperative MH [macular holes] has been reported to occur in approximately 20% of cases. ILM peeling removes the Müller cone cells, which form the base of the fovea and serve as a plug that binds the photoreceptor cells in the foveola and supports the foveola structurally. The stretched retina in a highly myopic eye can easily induce a MH without this structure. To prevent postoperative MH, fovea-sparing ILM peeling was introduced. Studies have shown that this technique can prevent MH formation very effectively. A piece of ILM is preserved in the center of fovea to prevent damage to the Müller cone cells during surgery... 3, record 1, English, - fovea%2Dsparing%20internal%20limiting%20membrane%20peeling

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The greatest determinant of the condition of paper remains the integrity of the cellulose fibres. The cellulose polymer is prone to chemical and physical damage that weakens the fibre network on a submicroscopic level, eventually manifesting in visible degradation. The principle mechanism of deterioration is chain scission(the long polymer is reduced to shorter and shorter segments) ;as this happens, the paper begins to lose its physical strength and may become discoloured. As the aging of paper decreases the length of the underlying cellulose chains and therefore the paper fibres, papers that started with longer fibres can undergo further aging before losing mechanical strength. 3, record 3, English, - aging

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT

Developing Hormosira banksii embryos, used as bioassays in toxicity studies, identified ammonium as a toxicant in secondary treated sewage effluent discharged at Boags Rocks, Victoria, Australia. Ammonium did not affect fertilization but had a significant effect on germination at 48 h and cell division at 72 h with most damage occurring in the first 48 h. Ammonium showed a similar effect as whole effluent(when expressed as mg N l-1 ammonium), sampled in June, September and November 1997, on developing H. banksii embryos. This similarity is further confirmed with comparable EC50(concentration causing an effect on 50% of the population tested) and LOEC(lowest observable effect concentration) values. 4, record 19, French, - concentration%20effective

Further on the assessment of potential accidents, the Commission questioned whether the containment structure was adequate to contain the worst possible event. McMaster University explained that the building was designed to withstand an extremely low-probability event producing 60 pounds of steam(or an increase in pressure in the containment of 1/2 psi). The Commission questioned McMaster University on the nature of the accident scenarios used in the revised safety analysis. McMaster University responded that it looked at a number of events considered at other small Canadian research reactors, but concentrated on a very low probability event(10-6) that involves a blockage of cooling water flow through the core that leads to fuel damage. 1, record 20, English, - extremely%20low%2Dprobability%20event

Pigeon Proofing. Pigeon guano often creates as much damage to a heritage building as moisture penetration. Sills, ledges, open towers and belfries are usually excellent resting places for such birds. Pigeon guano is highly hazardous and acidic and will prematurely corrode metal flashings and stain masonry. Roof Tile Management often recommends the installation of a stainless steel pigeon deterrent system such as that manufactured by Nixalite of America.
