Data recorded for each fishing trip included : effort(number of hooks), total catch(regardless of species)... and catch disposition. Catch disposition was further classified into four categories : retained, released alive, discarded dead, or lost. The lost catch refers to the proportion of total capture that becomes detached from the gear at the moment of hauling. This can be caused by operating problems(i. e. the tension of the gear, if contrary to the direction of the ship, may cause the fish to be lost if the ship does not stop in time), or if the species caught is of low commercial value, in which case the skipper will not stop the vessel... 1, record 1, English, - lost%20catch

Splitting. 1, record 6, French, - roulette%20russe

Folding a polypeptide chain to a compact globular form will necessitate some way to change the direction of the polypeptide chain, as might, for example, be required to connect adjacent ends of the polypeptide chains in an antiparallel [beta]-sheet. A commonly observed and particularly efficient way to do this is by formation of a tight loop in which a residue's carbonyl group forms a hydrogen bond with the amide NH group of the residue three positions further along the polypeptide chain. The resulting so-called [beta]-bend reverses the direction of the polypeptide chain. 1, record 10, English, - beta%2Dbend

Magneto-optics is the study of effects arising from the interaction of light with magnetized media. Initially linearly polarized light, after interaction with such materials, can exhibit both ellipticity and a rotation of the polarization state. These effects are generally categorized into two phenomena, the Faraday Effect which occurs when electro-magnetic radiation is transmitted through a magnetized media, and the Kerr Effect which deals with reflections from the magnetized media. The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect(MOKE) is further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence... If the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. As a matter of simplification, near normal incidence is usually employed when doing experiments in the polar geometry. In the longitudinal effect the magnetization vector is parallel to both the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization is perpendicular to the plane of incidence and parallel to the surface it is said to be in the transverse configuration. 2, record 11, English, - Magneto%2DOptical%20Kerr%20Effect

Magneto-optic Kerr effect(MOKE) is one of the magneto-optic effects. It describes changes of the reflections from the magnetized media. It is similar to the Faraday effect that describes the light passing through the media. The light that is reflected from a magnetized surface, changes in polarization. MOKE can be further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. 2, record 14, English, - polar%20Kerr%20effect

What is "cone of scent"? Odour particles always travel in the shape of a cone. A cone of scent is always concentrated and narrow at the source, and becomes wider and more diluted the further it travels. When a detector dog detects a substance that it has been trained to interdict, it uses the cone of scent to pinpoint the source of the odour. It starts by moving from one side to the other and back again in order to define the search area. Then, by moving up and down the cone, the dog can determine in which direction the odour becomes stronger. The dog can then follow the ever-narrowing cone of scent to its source. 1, record 15, English, - cone%20of%20scent

The EVA 3-D roller wrench operates using 3-D rollers connected with springs installed between concentric cylindrical races. The pins "disengage" one set of rollers, which allows its "engaged" partner roller to roll up the wedge surface of the hub when the wrench is turned in one direction. Rotation in the other direction causes the roller to roll down the wedge surface, disengaging the clutch for overrunning. This action allows the wrench to apply torque in one direction and free spin in the other like a traditional ratchet wrench. Moving the pins clockwise so that they engage neither roller will cause the wrench to become a rigid bar, allowing the wrench to apply torque in both directions. Rotating the pins further clockwise will cause them to "disengage" the rollers that were previously engaged, allowing the wrench to apply torque in the opposite direction as before. 2, record 16, English, - EVA%203%2DD%20roller%20wrench

Geotextile grids are manufactured from polymer sheets using the production sequence illustrated in Figure 2. 16. The first stage involves precise punching of a regular pattern of holes into the sheet. This is followed by carefully controlled stretching of the sheet in one direction while it is gently heated.... If no further processing is carried out a uniaxial grid with narrow rectangular apertures is formed.... The term "uniaxial" arises from the alignment of the stretched polymer ribs and the greatest strength properties in one direction. An alternative form of geotextile grid may be produced by incorporating a second stretching stage where the uniaxial grid is pulled in the transverse direction to give a biaxial grid with a squarer aperture shape.... In this case the term "biaxial" refers to the fact that both the stretched ribs and the strength properties are aligned in two directions. 1, record 27, English, - biaxial%20grid

A search technique which combines the best characteristics of all random search techniques, yet is faster, and is especially suited for multimodal as well as unimodal search. An initial guess is required to start the search. However, if a random trial is closer to the maximum/minimum, another step in the same direction is taken, and if this is a better point, another step in the same direction is selected until no further improvement occurs. Then the process moves back to the last point to cause improvement and commences a random search again. 1, record 29, English, - accelerated%20random%20search
