Irregularity in the diffusion of solute molecules that occurs in a porous chromatographic support, by the rapid process of mixing of the swirling eddies of the fluid. The phenomenon is due to the fact that (a) the pathlength for some solute molecules is either shorter or longer than that for the bulk of the molecules; and (b) the rate of solvent flow varies in different regions of the porous support. 2, record 11, English, - Eddy%20diffusion
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Non-ideal flow occurs when different elements of substrate move through the reactor at varying rates such that they are in contact with the enzyme for variable periods owing to their differing residence times in the reactor giving an opportunity for different extents of reaction to take place and for further reaction of the desired product and side-reactions to take place. Non-ideal flow can be caused by factors such as back-mixing, channelling, or the presence of stagnant flow regions within the reactors.... Eddy diffusion also causes inhomogeneous distribution of fluid. This effect occurs when there are variations in the size and shape of the support particles and because of the tendency of the larger particles to become packed close to the walls of the column such that the flow rate varies over the cross-section of the column. 3, record 11, English, - Eddy%20diffusion

Phenomenon which arises as a result of the build-up of a layer of rejected solute at the membrane surface which impedes solvent flow. The resistance to flow due to this layer thus increases until a point is reached where the rate of diffusion of solute away from the polarization layer equals the rate of deposition. This phenomenon also explains why the solvent flux often becomes invariant with an increasing transmembrane pressure drop. Although solvent flux through a membrane is a hydraulic pressure-activated process and should increase with increasing pressure, a point is reached where the rate of build-up of the solute polarization layer is such that flow is impeded and further increases in pressure have no effect. 2, record 12, English, - concentration%20polarization

Concentration is the only important application with regard to initial enzyme recovery. Coarse fractionation is rarely attempted on a large scale, mainly because concentration polarisation ... occurs during ultra-filtration, effectively preventing an adequate separation. Equally, removal of salts and low molecular weight species alone is not the prime consideration, although ultrafiltration is commonly used to this end later in enzyme purification processes. 4, record 12, English, - concentration%20polarization

2, record 12, French, - polarisation

Magneto-optics is the study of effects arising from the interaction of light with magnetized media. Initially linearly polarized light, after interaction with such materials, can exhibit both ellipticity and a rotation of the polarization state. These effects are generally categorized into two phenomena, the Faraday Effect which occurs when electro-magnetic radiation is transmitted through a magnetized media, and the Kerr Effect which deals with reflections from the magnetized media. The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect(MOKE) is further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence... If the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. As a matter of simplification, near normal incidence is usually employed when doing experiments in the polar geometry. In the longitudinal effect the magnetization vector is parallel to both the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization is perpendicular to the plane of incidence and parallel to the surface it is said to be in the transverse configuration. 2, record 13, English, - Magneto%2DOptical%20Kerr%20Effect

The current plan member contribution rates have been in effect since January 2000. In 1999, public sector pension reform legislation was introduced and plan members contribution rates were frozen for the years 2000 to 2003. It was further decided that plan member contributions rates would remain unchanged for 2004 and 2005, to allow for consultation and review in regards to the rates that would apply for the period beginning in 2006. 3, record 14, English, - pension%20reform

The start zones of avalanches are classified as either alpine(above treeline), treeline or below treeline. The treeline is defined as the elevation band above the dense forests and below the area with very few or no trees. An important difference between these zones is wind exposure. Alpine areas are most exposed to the effect of wind on snowpack distribution. Treeline areas generally show less wind effect on snowpack distribution but the distribution is complicated by bands of trees that may act as snow fences. The effect of the wind on the snowpack is further reduced in dense forests below treeline. 3, record 15, English, - above%20treeline

4, record 19, French, - pi%C3%A9geage%20min%C3%A9ral

It is similar to the Faraday effect that describes the light passing through the media. The light that is reflected from a magnetized surface, changes in polarization. MOKE can be further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. 2, record 20, English, - polar%20Kerr%20effect

In the past, many regions have produced high protein wheat without the need of fertilisers because of the high natural fertility of the soils. Because nitrogen is a primary constituent of grain protein, wheat of a high percentage protein is produced only where the crop is provided with an adequate nitrogen supply. So highly fertile soil is an essential ingredient for producing high quality wheat. The grain protein percentage is further modified by the grain yield of the crop. Increasing the yield of grain has a diluting effect on grain protein. This is why in dry seasons or seasons of low grain yield, a larger proportion of the crop is of a high protein percentage, whereas in seasons of high yield, wheat of high quality is in scarce supply. 1, record 23, English, - high%20protein%20wheat

In grain markets, which normally are carrying charge markets, there are a number of occasions when the price structure may become inverted. One is the difference in the supply situation between a contract month that falls at the end of a crop year and one which follows the new harvest. Particularly in years when there is a small carryover, there may well be a higher price in the old crop delivery month because of the difference in the supply and demand balance between the two months. Short-term supply and demand imbalances can also cause prices to invert. A sudden surge in demand or a shortfall in supply may cause the near contract to move higher, while having little or no effect on the further contracts. 2, record 28, English, - grain%20market

1, record 28, French, - march%C3%A9%20de%20grains

It is a common practice to open a Convention for signature by certain States until a certain date after the date of the formal session of signature. Generally, this period does not exceed nine months. The object is to obtain as many parties to the Convention as possible, but inasmuch as new signatories can only be allowed with the consent of the original signatories, a special clause to this effect must be inserted in the Convention. A current practice is to open a Convention for signature to all members of the United Nations and the specialised agencies, to all parties to the Statute of the International Court of Justice, and to any other State invited by the General Assembly. During the period mentioned, each State may sign at any time, but after the expiration of the period no further signatures are allowed and a non-signatory State desiring to become party must accede or adhere to the Convention but cannot ratify, inasmuch as it has not signed the instrument. 2, record 31, English, - open%20for%20signature

In most patient with growth hormone(GH) secreting pituitary adenomas and clinically nonfunctioning pituitary tumors(NFPT) the intravenous injection of thyrotropin releasing hormone(TRH) augments the secretion of GH and subunits of gonatropin hormones respectively. Similar hormone responses to TRH have been detected in rat pituitary cell lines and primary human pituitary tumor cultures in vitro. Nevertheless the TRH effect on tumor hormonal secretion has not been well characterized. In the present study we examined TRH-induced hormone secretion in GH secreting tumors and in NFPT in vitro. Cultured cells secreted betaFSH secretion at 60 to 90 min, with no further increase at 34 h. TRH-stimulated GH secretion peaked at 90-120 min, and decreased after 3 h, but a secondary rise occurred after 24 h of incubation. Chronic daily exposure to TRH followed by an acute TRH challenge resulted in a further increase of GH secretion after one hour. 3, record 32, English, - thyrotropin%2Dreleasing%20hormone%20challenge

"Bulling" or chambering of holes. The bottom of a small diameter borehole(such as diamond drill or wagon drill hole) may be enlarged by lighting and dropping a gelatine dynamite safety fuse primer into the hole. The burden is of course, too great for this small charge to break the ground. Its effect is to pulverize the rock in the vicinity and to expel it from the mouth of the hole in the form of dust. Meanwhile, the bottom of the hole has been increased in diameter in the form of a bulbous-shaped chamber, which will then accommodate a larger quantity of explosive. Care should be taken to allow the bottom of the hole to cool down before adding further explosives. The operation is variously called "bulling" or "chambering" or "springing". The method has been used chiefly in quarry work on bench holes. 5, record 34, English, - springing

Theory, often subscribed to in industrial relations/industrial psychology, that there are inevitably divergent interests in industry, particularly between employers and employees, but that there is also ultimately a framework of common interests. For example, management should recognize the right of workers to organize collectively but should further see that such recognition makes it easier to effect an acceptable compromise in the interests of both parties when a dispute does arise. The X-wing has emerged from the circulation controlled rotor(CCR) in which a hollow blade of roughly oval aerofoil section, that is, without a real lifting profile at all, can be made to lift effectively by blowing a layer of air through a slot and across the curved Coanda surface which forms the trailing-edge. While this in itself produces lift, the air jet can be so modulated as the rotor turns that it has the same effect as the cyclic pitch changing of the normal rotor. Finally, a further jet can be blown through a second slot near the leading-edge of the blade so that it restores the lost lift of the retreating blade. This fore-and-aft blowing is the key to the stopped-rotor X-wing. 1, record 36, English, - circulation%20controlled%20rotor

Hence, any piece of wall of the same general shape, having a more purely ornamental purpose. 2, record 38, English, - gable

Screening effects were also used on the exterior of churches, as in the transept of Notre Dame in Paris, where paper-thin gables tie the facade together and lap over the adjacent story. Gables were further used above, where they disrupted the firm horizontal cornice and altered the older effect of the wall as simple envelope for the volumes. 3, record 38, English, - gable

The major effects of refining on the individual fibers are summarized in Table 13-1. The initial action is to partially remove the primary wall. Although the primary wall is permeable to water, it does not swell and prevents the fiber from swelling. Removal of the P-layer exposes the secondary wall and allows water to be absorbed into the molecular structure. The consequent loosening of the internal structure promotes fiber swelling and renders the fiber soft and flexible. This so-called "internal fibrillation" is generally regarded as the most important primary effect of refining following removal of the primary wall. The further action of(external) fibrillation involves loosening of the fibrils and raising of the finer microfibrils on the surfaces of the fibers, resulting in a very large increase in surface area for the beaten fibers. 1, record 39, English, - external%20fibrillation

This neologism is a compound. It is formed by putting together a word(claw) and a combining form(-back). Compounds are formed of various parts of speech, and often a compound differs in part of speech from its components(for example : claw(verb) + back(adverb)=clawback(noun]. A compound may appear to be quite self-explanatory, but often it holds a specialized meaning. Semantically, a clawback is a cutback taken several steps further. The words resemble each other, but the connotations are quite different : while a "cutback" might meet some public resistance, a "clawback" gives the impression of something virtually torn from the hands of the public and dragged away. "Claw" gives the idea of a vulture, and includes all of its negative implications. It should also be pointed out that "clawbacks" rhymes with "drawbacks", and while the latter is never actually seen, the reader likely makes a psychological connection between the two words, amplifying the effect of the former. 2, record 40, English, - clawback

"Clawback" may be what is often termed a "nonce word" - a new word that is coined specifically for the occasion, a coinage which may soon disappear. Nonce words are formed with existing elements in the language, its standard words, combining forms, and affixes. Nonce words are often playful or fanciful coinages, many are puns, or are humorous. 2, record 40, English, - clawback

Greenhouse effect(...) The transparent glass or plastic walls and roof of the greenhouse transmit the shorter wavelength, visible light and infrared radiation from the sun but not the longer wavelengths. Thus, during the hours of daylight infrared radiation passes into the greenhouse and warms its atmosphere and the ground on which the house stands. The transparent walls and roof of the greenhouse partly reflect and partly absorb the longer wavelength radiation. Subsequently the walls and roofs re-emit the absorbed radiation into the house. Coating the glass with a non-heat-radiating film, which is transparent to sunlight, further maximizes the heating effect of radiation received. 2, record 46, English, - reinforced%20greenhouse%20effect
