The key idea in explaining the way in which structures evolve in the universe is gravitational instability. If material is to be brought together to form structures then a long-range force is required, and gravity is the only known possibility.... Suppose that at some initial time, say decoupling, there are small irregularities in the distribution of matter. Those regions with more matter will exert a greater gravitational force on their neighbouring regions, and hence tend to draw surrounding material in. This extra material makes them even denser than before, increasing their gravitational attraction and further enhancing their pull on their neighbours... 2, record 2, English, - gravitational%20instability

Purchase. From time to time refiners purchase product from others and pay for it like any other buyer, without any reciprocal supply conditions, although in the case of refiners these one-way agreements tend to be of short duration and for relatively small volumes to meet a temporary imbalance between their supplies and their supply commitments. As discussed further below, a more enduring or significant imbalance would tend to be addressed by a refiner through a reciprocal supply arrangement that benefitted the utilization rate of one of its refineries somewhere in the country and provided an additional measure of price and supply security. 1, record 3, English, - reciprocal%20supply%20arrangement

L'achat. 1, record 3, French, - accord%20d%27approvisionnement%20r%C3%A9ciproque

The adverse consequences of romantic rejection are illustrated by Novak v. Waterfront Comm’n [Commission] of N. Y. [New York] Harbor. The plaintiff, Shanti Novak, was a detective with the Waterfront Commission of N. Y. Harbor. She became romantically involved with Scott Politano at a time when both held the same rank, in different locations. Eventually the two became live-in partners, and during this time, Politano was promoted to Lieutenant and was transferred to Novak's office, consequently becoming her supervisor. Novak terminated her relationship with Politano shortly thereafter. After her breakup with Politano, Novak was singled out for unfavorable treatment even after Politano was replaced as Novak's supervisor. Novak was given unfavorable work and shift assignments; was subjected to heightened scrutiny with respect to her work and her requests for overtime pay and sick leave; was the only detective not to receive further formal detective training; was excluded from an email regarding a shooting range schedule; and was the only detective to whom newly hired detectives were not assigned, which was both humiliating and deprived her of the opportunity to learn from the new assignees, who were seasoned detectives from other agencies. The situation became worse after she complained to the human resources department. 2, record 4, English, - live%2Din%20partner

This can be caused by operating problems(i. e. the tension of the gear, if contrary to the direction of the ship, may cause the fish to be lost if the ship does not stop in time), or if the species caught is of low commercial value, in which case the skipper will not stop the vessel... 1, record 6, English, - lost%20catch

How can one recognize the difference between a stable surface and one that is actively corroding?... If a strong, even film of corrosion is formed on a metal, this will often protect the underlying metal against further corrosion by providing a barrier against new chemical reactions. Thus, a stable passivating layer is produced. Stable surfaces on metal objects are generally adherent and the thickness does not increase(or increases only minimally) with time. 2, record 12, English, - stable%20surface

Tips for street wash water. Industrial facilities and construction sites that discharge debris and sediment to city streets must clean up after their operations in a reasonable amount of time; but they must also do it properly. Washing these pollutants further into the storm sewer system(i. e. washing them into catch basins or other stormwater inlet structures) is not an option. A careful balance must be met between applying enough water to clean the street, but not so much as to either flood the street or cause pollutants to be discharged further into the system. 3, record 13, English, - street%20wash%20water

Diafiltration is an additional step in milk processing that is sometimes done to achieve a higher protein concentration. For many milk protein concentrates, the process begins and ends with ultrafiltration-without the addition of any diluent. Due to the fact that the milk protein concentrate is so thick after undergoing ultrafiltration, it has to be diluted to achieve a further level of protein concentration. At which point it is filtered a second time. This second filtration after the retentate of the ultrafiltration has been diluted is known as diafiltration. 1, record 18, English, - diafiltered%20milk

Grapes for late-harvest wine are left on the vine for several weeks or in some cases months after the usual harvest. With more time, the berries become riper and thus sweeter. They may also begin to lose water through evaporation, further concentrating the natural fruit sugars. All that sweetness turns out to be literally too much for the yeast in the fermenting vat, which tires out and dies before it can convert all the sugar into alcohol to create a dry wine. 2, record 24, English, - late%2Dharvest%20wine

Gas-solid cocurrent downflow(downer) reactors offer many advantages over gas-solid cocurrent upflow(riser) reactors, such as better gas-solids contact efficiency, more uniform gas and solids residence time distributions and the potential capability of handling higher solids-gas loading ratios. These features make the downer an excellent reactor for fast reactions and especially for fast reactions where the intermediate is the product. This new type of reactor has so far not been well developed but has huge potential for many industrial processes such as fluid catalytic cracking of crude oil where further improvement in the gas-solids contact efficiency will lead to significant economic gains, pyrolysis of some solids waste into valuable organic products which provides a more energy efficient alternative to waste incineration... 1, record 26, English, - cocurrent%20downflow%20reactor

His estate was then said to be turned to a right....(I) f(he) further suffered a certain time to elapse, or had judgment given against him in a possessory action, he could no longer recover by possessory action, but only by an action on the right, meaning the right of ownership as opposed to the right to possession. Detection efficiency. The intrinsic detection efficiency of any device operated in pulse mode is defined as the probability that a quantum of radiation incident on the detector will produce a recorded pulse. Especially for radiations of low intensity, a high detection efficiency is important to minimize the total time needed to record enough pulses for good statistical accuracy in the measurement. Detection efficiency is further subdivided into two types : total efficiency and peak efficiency. The total efficiency gives the probability that an incident quantum of radiation produces a pulse, regardless of size, from the detector. The peak efficiency is defined as the probability that the quantum will deposit all its initial energy in the detector. Since there are almost always ways in which the quantum may deposit only part of its energy and then escape from the detector, the total efficiency is generally larger than the peak efficiency. 1, record 38, English, - peak%20efficiency

The product enables the trading participants to trade natural gas for the current gas delivery day for the GASPOOL and NCG [NetConnect Germany] market areas in the course of the day. The delivery period comprises the remaining hours of the respective current natural gas delivery day minus a lead time of three hours until the respective next full hour. 2, record 39, English, - within%20day%20contract

The half cooling time measures the time that is taken to remove 50% of the heat from the apple. For example, if fruit temperatures are at 72°F in storage room at 32°F, the temperature difference between the fruit and final desired temperature is 40°F. A half cooling time of 8 hours means that it will take that time to reduce fruit temperatures by half this amount, i. e., 20°F, to reach a temperature of 52°F, and a further 8 hours to reduce fruit temperatures by 10°F to 42°F. In practice, we consider that it takes three half cooling times to "cool" a product. 2, record 40, English, - half%20cooling%20time

Peak Limiter processes your 16-bit sound files using a sophisticated algorithm. Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth like a turtleneck around your neck. When you have periodontal disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, forming "pockets" around the teeth. Over time, these pockets become deeper, providing a larger space for bacteria to live. As bacteria develop around the teeth, they can accumulate and advance under the gum tissue. These deep pockets collect even more bacteria, resulting in further bone and tissue loss. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the teeth will need to be extracted. 3, record 45, English, - periodontal%20pocket

Strowger systems were mechanical. The rotary dial on the telephone, when rotated and released interrupted the steady current flowing in the telephone line. These ’pulses’ were counted in the exchange and used to move the mechanical arm of the Strowger switch up to a contact. Further pulses rotated the switch across a bank of contacts. It would need several such switches to handle just one call. These exchanges were fitted in large racks and took up a lot of room space. Automation speeded up the time it took to connect a call. 2, record 52, English, - bank%20of%20contacts

With the absence of closed recycling loops in streams, one mechanism for controlling nutrient and energy losses via hydrologic transport is through regulation of outflow losses by stream biota. Nutrients and energy are released at one point in a stream become available as resources(i. e. stabilized inputs) at points further down the topographic gradient. Thus, resources are successfully "spiraled" down the stream rather than "recycled" in place.... thus, it can be hypothesized that streams are "spiralling" or cascading systems in which the retention time and efficiency of resources utilization are maximized through control by specialized functional groups down the stream continuum. 3, record 56, English, - spiral

UISP was started in 1988, to further the education of students from developing countries. CIDA and Canadian universities confinanced scholarships. The universities were responsible for selecting students and for their stay in Canada. CIDA covered the costs of travel, tuition, accommodation, and books. At least 25% of the students were to be women in the first year, rising to 50% by the third year of the program. A second phase of UISP was launched in 1991, this time with the criteria that students coming to canada be from developing-country institutions already working with Canadian universities and that the field of study be related to an ongoing project of the Canadian and developing-country institutions. This program bolstered international development activities at many Canadian universities and furthered their internationalization. 1, record 58, English, - University%20Initiated%20Scholarship%20Program

1, record 58, French, - Programme%20de%20bourses%20des%20universit%C3%A9s

A night time rainbow is sometimes called a moon bow because it is a reflection of the light of the moon. ... Any rainbow comes from light hitting drops of rain and going into the drop and being reflected off of the inside edge. As the light leaves the drop on it’s return journey the other side of the drop acts like a prism and separates it into the colors of the rainbow. ... with moon light it makes something shaped like a rainbow with just a hint color. Moon bows occur in the side of the sky opposite the moon. 2, record 61, English, - moonbow
Record number: 61, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Even though the optics of both is the same, the luminance of the lunar rainbow is much lower. As a result of the eye's reduced sensitivity to color at low light levels, the bow may exhibit little color. There are several reasons why the lunar rainbow is seen much less frequently than the solar bow. While the moon and sun spend equal time above the horizon, when they are both present, only a solar bow can be seen. This, by itself, means that the lunar rainbow could form only half as often. Further, the moon goes through phases, and so even at night may not contribute enough light to produce a discernible bow. Finally, the convective showers in which the rainbow is frequently seen are much less common at night. 6, record 61, English, - moonbow

Thermomechanical steam treatment(TM-V). The defibrillation is accomplished by a short time steam treatment followed by a flash decompression. This process was patented by Mason(1928) and has constituted the technological basis for the production of a wide range of fiberboards. In the 1970's, the potential of this technique as a defibration and fractionation process was fully realized. Pilot and industrial installations derived from this technology are known under the generic name of "steam explosion methods"... The TM-V processes literally force the destructuring and eventual disintegration of the lignocellulosic wall structure. The hemicelluloses and a small part of the lignin can be extracted by hot water washing. The residue of this operation can be further extracted with an alkaline solution or with organic solvents in order to solubilize the lignin which can then be recovered by precipitation. Cellulose is obtained as the solid residue after the lignin extraction. 1, record 77, English, - thermomechanical%20steam%20treatment

1, record 77, French, - traitement%20thermom%C3%A9canique%20%C3%A0%20la%20vapeur

The return of a portion of the freight charges by a carrier or a conference shipper in exchange for the shipper giving all or most of his shipments to the carrier or conference over a specified period of time(usually 6 months). Payment of the rate is deferred for a further similar period, during which the shipper must continue to give all or most of his shipments to the rebating carrier or conference. The shipper thus earns a further rebate which will not, however, be paid without an additional period of exclusive or almost exclusive patronage with the carrier of conference. In this way, the shipper becomes tied to the rebating carrier or conference. Although, the deferred rebate system is illegal in U. 1, record 81, English, - gas%2Dsolid%20reactor

It is a common practice to open a Convention for signature by certain States until a certain date after the date of the formal session of signature. Generally, this period does not exceed nine months. The object is to obtain as many parties to the Convention as possible, but inasmuch as new signatories can only be allowed with the consent of the original signatories, a special clause to this effect must be inserted in the Convention. A current practice is to open a Convention for signature to all members of the United Nations and the specialised agencies, to all parties to the Statute of the International Court of Justice, and to any other State invited by the General Assembly. During the period mentioned, each State may sign at any time, but after the expiration of the period no further signatures are allowed and a non-signatory State desiring to become party must accede or adhere to the Convention but cannot ratify, inasmuch as it has not signed the instrument. 2, record 83, English, - open%20for%20signature

Larger companies, particularly publicly held corporations, are required to use the accrual basis of accounting. From the accrual accounting perspective, the purpose of the expenditure determines whether or not the expenditure is an expense at the time of payment. For example, if a business expends cash for office supplies, no expense occurs until the office supplies are used in business operations. The spending of cash is not the "critical event". Thus, when a business buys postage stamps, it has purchased an "asset", that is, an item that has a future potential to benefit the company. If the stamps are used to mail an invoice to a customer or supplier, then the "expense" occurs because the stamp(asset) has no further benefit for the company. 3, record 84, English, - accrual%20accounting%20perspective

In former times International Law empowered States when war was impending, or at its outbreak, to lay an embargo upon all enemy merchantmen in their harbours in order to confiscate them. Further, enemy merchantmen at sea could at the outbreak of war be captured and confiscated, although they did not even know of the outbreak of war. As regards enemy merchantmen in the harbours of the belligerents, it became, from 1854, during the Crimean War, a usage followed by some countries that no embargo should be laid on them for the purpose of confiscating them, and that a reasonable time, so-called days of grace, should be granted them to depart unmolested; but no rule was in existence until the Second Hague Conference of 1907, which produced a Convention(VI.) "relative to the Status of Enemy Merchant-ships at the Outbreak of hostilities». 3, record 90, English, - days%20of%20grace

Deferred rebate : The return of a portion of the freight charges by a carrier or a conference shipper in exchange for the shipper giving all or most of his shipments to the carrier or conference over a specified period of time(usually 6 months). S. foreign commerce, it generally is accepted in the ocean trade between foreign countries. 1, record 96, English, - deferred%20rebate%20system

1, record 99, French, - enrichissement%20de%20la%20biodiversit%C3%A9
