Diatomite products that are further processed are called calcined and flux calcined diatomite. Most diatomite products are used in filtering applications. With a large particle size distribution, the smallest of the particles occupy space between larger particles. This reduces the rates of flow through the filter. The purpose of calcining is to reduce the particle size distribution. The use of the term calcined is ingrained in the diatomite industry and markets so it is used frequently, but diatomite is actually sinterized not calcined. Sintering reduces the size distribution by melting the smallest particles together. To produce calcined diatomite the natural product is heated to between 900°C and 1100°C. The high temperatures burn off organic contaminants, and shrink and harden the individual particles. Some of the diatom frustules are sintered into small clusters. The resulting calcined diatomite has a density of about 125 to 150 kg per cubic meter. Flux calcined diatomite is produced using the same methods except a fluxing agent is added before heating.

Larger companies, particularly publicly held corporations, are required to use the accrual basis of accounting. From the accrual accounting perspective, the purpose of the expenditure determines whether or not the expenditure is an expense at the time of payment. For example, if a business expends cash for office supplies, no expense occurs until the office supplies are used in business operations. The spending of cash is not the "critical event". Thus, when a business buys postage stamps, it has purchased an "asset", that is, an item that has a future potential to benefit the company. If the stamps are used to mail an invoice to a customer or supplier, then the "expense" occurs because the stamp(asset) has no further benefit for the company.

Iron metals, alloys, and steels... the OBM/Q-BOP, LWS, and SIP processes have been developed which use bottom blowing of oxygen and a shielding hydrocarbon through tuyeres in the bottom of the converter vessel.... The OBM process was initially developed in Germany. The designation Q-BOP, introduced in the United States after further development work, is intended to emphasize the advantages of the new process compared with the Basic Oxygen Process(BOP). The letter, Q, stands for "quiet, quick, quality".
