Emergency road flares, despite being around for decades, are only recently evolving with more modern technology. The most commonly used is still the traditional fusee flare, which is incendiary. But now, there are also road flares that use LED lights, which offer several advantages over traditional fusee flares.... LED flares are brighter, longer-lasting, and more visible from a distance. LED flares are particularly well-suited for use in work zones, where their bright light can help to keep workers safe.... LED flares are also less likely to cause fires, making them safer to use in areas with dry vegetation or other flammable materials.... LED flares are also more durable than traditional flares and can be used in all weather conditions.

En 1959, le Meteorological Office reçut l'autorisation de créer une High Altitude Research Unit avec mission d'effectuer des études de l'atmosphère jusqu'à 80 km d'altitude. La petite fusée météorologique à poudre Skua fut créée [...] Il s'agissait d'une fusée de 2,24 m de long pour 12,7 cm de diamètre pesant 36,7 kg (57,6 kg avec le booster), lancée à partir d'un simple tube de 5 m de long. Le booster Chick brûlait pendant 0.2 sec et se séparait vers 20 m d'altitude pour être récupérée par parachute. Le second étage Bantam brûlait une trentaine de secondes et pouvait atteindre environ 70 km d'altitude avec 5 kg de charge utile (un parachute permettant les mesures relatives au vent et une sonde pour les mesures de température).
