[A] thermonuclear bomb, also called hydrogen bomb, or H-bomb, [is a] weapon whose enormous explosive power results from an uncontrolled self-sustaining chain reaction in which isotopes of hydrogen combine under extremely high temperatures to form helium in a process known as nuclear fusion. The high temperatures that are required for the reaction are produced by the detonation of an atomic bomb. A thermonuclear bomb differs fundamentally from an atomic bomb in that it utilizes the energy released when two light atomic nuclei combine, or fuse, to form a heavier nucleus.

In nuclear fusion power research, a divertor is a device within a tokamak or a stellarator that allows the online removal of waste material from the plasma while the reactor is still operating. This allows control over the buildup of fusion products in the fuel, and removes impurities in the plasma that have entered into it from the vessel lining.

Situated on an old Navy airfield near Culham, Oxfordshire, in the UK, construction was started in 1978 and the first experiments began in 1983. JET is equipped with remote handling facilities to cope with the radioactivity produced by Deuterium-Tritium(D-T) fuel, which is the fuel proposed for the first generation of fusion power plants. Pending construction of ITER, JET remains the only large fusion reactor with facilities dedicated to handling the radioactivity release from D-T fusion. The power production record breaking runs from JET and TFTR [Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor] used 50-50 D-T fuel mixes.

The strong black liquor from storage first goes to the bottom of the precipitator where it "picks up" the chemical particulates ... dropped from the electrodes. (If the precipitator is a "dry bottom" type, a series of screw conveyors or scraper-chain conveyors moves the material into the chemical ash tank.) Next, the liquor is pumped to the direct-contact evaporator where the solids concentration increases from both evaporation and further pickup of dust from the contacted gases.
