The process is usually aided by a controlled pressure. In dielectric seaming the heat is induced within films by means of ratio-frequency waves.

The melting point of a substance should be considered a property of its crystalline form only. At the melting point the liquid and solid forms of a substance exist in equilibrium. The melting point of a pure crystalline solid is a function of pressure; it increases with increasing pressure for most substances. As the mixture [of raw materials] moves down the cylinder [of the rotary kiln], it progresses through four stages of transformation. Initially, any free water in the powder is lost by evaporation. Next, decomposition occurs from the loss of bound water and carbon dioxide. This is called calcination. The third stage is called clinkering. During this stage, the calcium silicates are formed. The final stage is the cooling stage.
