Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
As the mixture [of raw materials] moves down the cylinder [of the rotary kiln], it progresses through four stages of transformation. Initially, any free water in the powder is lost by evaporation. Next, decomposition occurs from the loss of bound water and carbon dioxide. This is called calcination. The third stage is called clinkering. During this stage, the calcium silicates are formed. The final stage is the cooling stage. 5, record 1, English, - clinkering
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 3 CONT
The slurry is fed into huge rotary kilns fired with coal or natural gas. In the early stages of heating, the moisture is driven off. The dry powder then reaches the burning zone and partial fusion or clinkering occurs at a temperature of around 1, 500 degrees Celsius. 3, record 1, English, - clinkering

Zone melting. The term applied to a method of separation by fusion(and hence of purification) in which one, or a series of molten zones traverses a bar or rod of metal. The molten zone as it progresses through the bar melts impure solid at the forward edge(the impure melt has a lower melting point than the pure metal) and leaves purer metal solidified behind the rear edge. Thus the impurities tend to concentrate in the melt and move towards one end on the bar. 1, record 4, English, - molten%20zone

Zone fondue (procédé de la). [...] 3, record 4, French, - zone%20fondue
