Futures contracts are "marked to market" each day; that is to say, if the value of the futures contract changes as a result of a day's trading, the customer's margin account is adjusted to reflect that change. If the value of the position rises, money is paid into the margin account. If the value of the position falls, money is withdrawn from the account to cover the amount of the decline. If the net margin deposit falls below the maintenance margin level, the customer is required to deposit extra money to cover the loss and bring the total amount on deposit back to the original level. 1, record 11, English, - marked%20to%20market

4, record 16, French, - baril%2Dtitre

The "buying hedge" protects against price increases. Suppose an exporter sells a cargo of grain for delivery in six months. If the exporter buys the grain upon receipt of the order, to ensure a supply at a known price, capital would be tied up and storage, insurance and interest costs incurred. If [he] waits until the delivery date to buy the grain, there is the risk of a price increase. 1, record 19, French, - contrepartie%20d%27achat

In 1972, it changed its name from Winnipeg Grain and Produce Exchange to Winnipeg Commodity Exchange, reflecting its ambitions as a commodities exchange and futures market, although futures had been traded at the exchange since 1904. 3, record 25, English, - Winnipeg%20Commodity%20Exchange

The holders of short futures positions in the near contracts would be unable to fulfill their commitments to deliver and would need to buy back their futures contracts in order to erase their commitment. At the same time, those who had bought futures contracts, in order to protect the price of a sale, would tend to hold onto the position to ensure that they would receive supplies. Futures contracts are "marked to market" each day; i. e., if the value of the futures contract changes as a result of a day's trading, the customer's margin account is adjusted to reflect that change. Margins are monies deposited by customers with futures commission merchants to ensure performance on futures contracts held. The Winnipeg Commodity Exchange has established minimum levels of margins which futures commission merchants must require of their customers. These minimum levels vary with the commodity and with market conditions and usually range between 5% and 10% of the contract. A merchant who buys grain in the cash market can protect himself against possible price reductions by selling a futures contract for an equal volume of grain. For example, a primary elevator company which has bought grain from producers and paid cash for it, faces losses if the cash price falls before the grain can be shipped to a terminal and sold. But, by selling a futures contract, the primary elevator company can normally assure itself a price that will cover costs. This is known as a "selling hedge", and is designed to protect crops or inventories against price drops. 1, record 32, English, - selling%20hedge

The Coffee, Sugar & Cocoa Exchange, Inc., known initially as the Coffee Exchange of the City of New York, was founded in 1882. The Exchange was formed by a group of coffee merchants who wished to avoid the risk of a cash market collapse by organizing a market for trading in coffee futures. In 1914, the Coffee Exchange expanded to include futures in sugar, and, in 1916, it became the New York Coffee and Sugar Exchange, Inc. On September 28, 1979, the New York Cocoa Exchange, Inc., which had been in existence since 1925, was officially merged into the Coffee and Sugar Exchange, and the name Coffee, Sugar & Cocoa Exchange, Inc. was adopted. 2, record 46, English, - Coffee%2C%20Sugar%20%26%20Cocoa%20Exchange%2C%20Inc%2E

Another procedure, becoming more popular with Canadian dealers, as it has with their U. S. counterparts, is to hedge their bond inventory on the futures market. The dealer lessens the price risk on his inventory by selling treasury bill futures contracts, or Government of Canada long term bond futures contracts, or Government of Canada long term bond futures, so that losses on his physical inventory will be to some extent offset by his gains on the futures markets, in the event prices decline. 3, record 49, English, - treasury%20bill%20futures%20contract

2, record 49, French, - contrat%20%C3%A0%20terme%20de%20bons%20du%20Tr%C3%A9sor
