In the 1700s a Japanese man named Homma, a trader in the futures market, developed a method of technical analysis to analyze the price of rice contracts known as candlestick charting. Candlestick charts display the high, low, open, and close for a security each day over a specified period of time, in a format similar to a bar chart, but in a manner that extenuates the relationship between the opening and closing prices. 3, record 1, English, - Japanese%20candlestick%20chart

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The "buying hedge" protects against price increases. Suppose an exporter sells a cargo of grain for delivery in six months. If the exporter buys the grain upon receipt of the order, to ensure a supply at a known price, capital would be tied up and storage, insurance and interest costs incurred. If [he] waits until the delivery date to buy the grain, there is the risk of a price increase. However, by buying a contract in the futures market, [he] establishes the price and ensures a supply to meet his commitment, without paying holding costs other than those built into the price. 8, record 4, English, - buying%20hedge

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
1, record 4, French, - contrepartie%20d%27achat

[...] A slowdown in the normal flow of grain to a terminal may cause a shortage in supply available for immediate delivery. The holders of short futures positions in the near contracts would be unable to fulfill their commitments to deliver and would need to buy back their futures contracts in order to erase their commitment. At the same time, those who had bought futures contracts, in order to protect the price of a sale, would tend to hold onto the position to ensure that they would receive supplies. To attract sellers to take their positions, the shorts may have to bid for the nearby contracts until they reached a premium over the further contracts, thus creating an inverted market. 2, record 6, English, - inverted%20market

2, record 6, French, - march%C3%A9%20invers%C3%A9

A merchant who buys grain in the cash market can protect himself against possible price reductions by selling a futures contract for an equal volume of grain. For example, a primary elevator company which has bought grain from producers and paid cash for it, faces losses if the cash price falls before the grain can be shipped to a terminal and sold. But, by selling a futures contract, the primary elevator company can normally assure itself a price that will cover costs. This is known as a "selling hedge", and is designed to protect crops or inventories against price drops. 1, record 7, English, - selling%20hedge

1, record 7, French, - contrepartie%20de%20vente

Another procedure, becoming more popular with Canadian dealers, as it has with their U. S. counterparts, is to hedge their bond inventory on the futures market. The dealer lessens the price risk on his inventory by selling treasury bill futures contracts, or Government of Canada long term bond futures contracts, or Government of Canada long term bond futures, so that losses on his physical inventory will be to some extent offset by his gains on the futures markets, in the event prices decline. 3, record 9, English, - treasury%20bill%20futures%20contract
