The "buying hedge" protects against price increases. Suppose an exporter sells a cargo of grain for delivery in six months. If the exporter buys the grain upon receipt of the order, to ensure a supply at a known price, capital would be tied up and storage, insurance and interest costs incurred. If [he] waits until the delivery date to buy the grain, there is the risk of a price increase. However, by buying a contract in the futures market, [he] establishes the price and ensures a supply to meet his commitment, without paying holding costs other than those built into the price. 8, record 17, English, - buying%20hedge

1, record 17, French, - contrepartie%20d%27achat

Futures trading benefits the grain industry in several ways. If primary elevator operators could not avoid the risk of price fluctuations by hedging, banks would charge them more interest on money borrowed to pay producers for grain. They would need wider profit margins, between the price paid to producers and their selling price, to cover the risk of price declines and the higher credit costs. Exporters would need wider profit margins on their sales to cover storage costs or possible price increases between sales and delivery. Processors would have to increase their prices to cover the risk of fluctuating grain costs. 1, record 24, English, - fluctuating%20grain%20costs

1, record 24, French, - fluctuation%20des%20cours%20du%20grain

A merchant who buys grain in the cash market can protect himself against possible price reductions by selling a futures contract for an equal volume of grain. For example, a primary elevator company which has bought grain from producers and paid cash for it, faces losses if the cash price falls before the grain can be shipped to a terminal and sold. But, by selling a futures contract, the primary elevator company can normally assure itself a price that will cover costs. This is known as a "selling hedge", and is designed to protect crops or inventories against price drops. 1, record 26, English, - selling%20hedge

1, record 26, French, - contrepartie%20de%20vente
