Record 2 2006-09-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fabric Nomenclature
DEF

A cotton, woolen, or worsted fabric with a steep, diagonally ribbed surface.

OBS

[Whipcord is] very much like gabardine, but the yarn is bulkier and much more pronounced. The twill is steep 63 degrees and goes from left to right(except for cotton). It is very durable, rugged and stands hard usage and wear. In time, it shines a bit with wear. Some times back is napped for warmth. So named because it stimulates the lash of a whip.

French

DEF

CONT

Winter dress in pale khaki wool gabardine, with chocolate brown topstitching.

CONT

Les surpiqûres blanches sur les coutures.

OBS

Twill : The term twill designates both a textile weave characterised by diagonal structural designs and the cloth made from that weave. The weave may be varied to produce broken or intertwining effects. Twill fabrics are usually firm and are used especially in suits and in sport and work clothes. Twill-weave fabrics are also used for linings, pockets, and mattress ticking. Serge, gabardine, and cheviot are major types of twill.

CONT

Denim : Strong, heavy twill-weave fabric, usually cotton, but can be a cotton/synthetic blend. Gabardine : Firm, closely woven twill fabric, originally and often worsted wool; also made of cotton and synthetic fibers.
