GAGGING [5 records]

Record 1 2023-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Respiratory Tract
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
DEF

An apnea either as the result of obstruction of the air passages or inadequate respiratory muscle activity.

CONT

Apnea, obstructive and central, also has been associated with aspiration of gastric contents. Laryngospasm is manifest as obstructive apnea secondary to reflux. Classically, obstructive apnea occurs within 1 hour after a feed when a patient suddenly stops, becomes apneic, stares, and develops a rigid opisthotonic posture. Continued ineffective respiratory effort is observed, but coughing or gagging is not necessarily present. If this progresses, pallor, cyanosis, and possible hypotonia ensue. The complete obstruction of the larynx impedes air movement, causing an obstructive picture.

OBS

This type of apnea often occurs during sleep, when pharyngeal muscle tone is low. Recurrent obstructive apneas during sleep characterize the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

DEF

  • Dietetics
DEF

... a persistent feeding or eating disturbance manifested by avoidance of food or restrictive food intake [that] results in significant weight loss or nutritional deficiency, dependence on tube feeding or nutritional supplements, and/or impairment in psychosocial functioning.

CONT

Unlike anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, ARFID is not characterized by a preoccupation with body shape and weight or by intentional weight loss behaviors. Instead, patients suffering from ARFID may be disinterested in food and eating, or may avoid foods because of a negative response to their color, texture, smell, taste or temperature. Individuals may also excessively fear unpleasant consequences of eating such as choking, gagging or vomiting(functional dysphagia) or exacerbated gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.

A tube inserted through the mouth and pharynx so that the tongue does not block air flow in an unconscious person.

OBS

[An] oropharyngeal airway(OPA) [is a] curved piece of plastic inserted over the tongue that creates an air passage way between the mouth and the posterior pharyngeal wall. [This device is] useful when the tongue and/or epiglottis fall back against the posterior pharynx in anesthetized or unconscious patients obstructing the flow of air.... This device is poorly tolerated in conscious patients and may induce gagging, vomiting and aspiration.

OBS

An oropharyngeal airway (also known as an oral airway, OPA or Guedel pattern airway) is a medical device called an airway adjunct used to maintain a patent (open) airway.
