GAIN MEDIUM [6 records]

Record 1 2024-02-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Lasers and Masers
CONT

Electrical pumping is another method of laser pumping; it involves passing an electric current through the gain medium to excite the atoms or molecules. This is the pumping mechanism used in virtually all gas lasers, where the flow of electricity through a low-pressure gas creates a plasma.

Key term(s)
  • electrical-discharge pumping

French

Domaine(s)
  • Masers et lasers
CONT

CONT

A solid-state laser is a laser that uses a gain medium that is a solid, rather than a liquid as in dye lasers or a gas as in gas lasers.

Subject field(s)
  • Oscillators and Oscillating Circuits (Electronics)
  • Lasers and Masers
CONT

Analogously with an electrode oscillator the constituent components of the laser [are] a tuned circuit, a feedback system and a power supply.

CONT

In order to use... a [laser] medium as [an] optical oscillator, the optical gain arising from the inverted population must exceed the loss in the resonator... To accomplish this, the optical path through the laser material is made long in one direction, and highly reflecting mirrors are placed so that they send the light back and forth along the length of the material. The mirrors provide feedback... and thereby convert the optical amplifier into an optical oscillator. Oscillation than takes place only between the mirrors.

OBS

[A] laser ... is more an oscillator than an amplifier.

Domaine(s)
  • Circuits oscillants et oscillateurs (Électronique)
  • Masers et lasers
DEF

On voit parfois «laser as oscillator».

It consists of a reflecting mirror(spatula) and a phase-conjugate minor(crystal at beam intersection). It requires no amplifying medium because the phase-conjugate mirror provides the necessary gain.
