GALACTIC GAS [6 records]

Record 1 2015-02-20

Subject field(s)
  • The Stars (Astronomy)
OBS

"Star clusters" are physically related groups of stars having their members less widely separated than are the stars around them. The common motion of the members of a cluster through the star fields suggests their common origin by the condensing and fracturing of a large cosmic gas cloud. Because the stars of a particular cluster are practically at the same distance from us, they may be compared fairly one with another. Although their ages are about the same, the members have different masses, and the more massive ones have evolved the faster.... Star clusters are associated with other galaxies as well as with our own. They are of two types :galactic, or open clusters and globular clusters.

OBS

OBS

"Population II stars"... are relatively aged objects of low metal content, i. e. they are mainly hydrogen and perhaps helium, with little or no gas and dust; orbits have a high eccentricity(often outside of the galactic plane).... Examples include the globular star clusters of our own galaxy. These stars are on the average one hundred times less luminous than population I stars. Masses do not exceed 1 1/2 times that of our sun. Ages approach 1010 years.

A galactic disk with a dense center and a spiral structure of gas and dust.

OBS

Three groups of spirals are identified Sa, Sb and Sc.

OBS

CONT

The energy eruptions in the solar atmosphere can lead to the acceleration of local gas particles to extremely high energies and their injection into the interplanetary space. These fast moving streams of particles are recorded by ERNE. At times, when there is no energetic particle production at the Sun, ERNE is observing the continuous flux of energetic particles from Milky Way(galactic cosmic rays), and from the boundary of the heliosphere accelerated by the termination shock(anomalous cosmic rays).

X-ray binary. The most common type of luminous galactic x-ray source, involving a close binary system in which gas flows(via the inner Lagrangian point) or blows(by a strong stellar wind) from a normal nondegenerate star on to a compact companion. For the most luminous sources,... this companion is probably a neutron star or black hole;...
