"Population II stars"... are relatively aged objects of low metal content, i. e. they are mainly hydrogen and perhaps helium, with little or no gas and dust; orbits have a high eccentricity(often outside of the galactic plane).... Examples include the globular star clusters of our own galaxy. These stars are on the average one hundred times less luminous than population I stars. Masses do not exceed 1 1/2 times that of our sun. Ages approach 1010 years. 1, record 1, English, - population%20II

The COS-B satellite will carry a single large experiment, capable of detecting gamma-rays with energies in excess of 20 MeV in order to study in detail the sources of extraterrestrial gamma radiation. The principal objectives of the study will be to investigate the angular structure of gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane, to measure the flux of the isotropic radiation from high galactic latitudes believed to be of extra-galactic origin, to examine known or postulated point sources of the radiation and to determine the energy spectra of all identified sources. 3, record 2, English, - extraterrestrial%20gamma%20radiation
