Subject field(s)
  • Space Exploration Equipment and Tools
  • Radiological Physics (Theory and Application)
DEF

... an energetic particle designed to measure a broad spectrum of energetic particle radiation.

OBS

It will make the first-ever direct radiation measurements on the surface of Mars, detecting galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles, secondary neutrons, and other secondary particles created both in the atmosphere and in the Martian regolith.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement et outillage d'exploration spatiale
  • Physique radiologique et applications
CONT

CONT

Radiation. Three principal types of radiation are present on the lunar surface : Solar radiation … Solar energetic radiationGalactic cosmic radiation(GCR), important because of the effects on humans of these very high energy particles and because of the effects of secondary neutrons when shielding is inadequate.

French

Record 5 2011-05-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Physics
CONT

The theory of physics of heavy-ion transport is well developed, although modeling of the complex interacting processes is only approximate. Generally it states that : nuclei of GCR [galactic cosmic radiation] slowed down as a result of ionization losses, GCR primaries are fragmented as they interact in materials and continue to transport fragments(projectile secondaries), recoil neutrons are formed from proton and neutron collisions, and neutrons, protons and alphas(target secondaries) are produced in inelastic proton collisions.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique nucléaire
CONT

[…] un appareillage capable de détecter avec une efficacité voisine de 1 les mésons […] et de mesurer avec une bonne précision la direction et l'énergie des neutrons de recul créés dans la réaction d'échange de charge.

Record 6 2011-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electromagnetic Radiation
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
CONT

... the source of cosmic radiation comes from our Sun, where it is called solar cosmic radiation and from the stars where it is called Galactic cosmic radiation.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Rayonnements électromagnétiques
  • Soleil (Astronomie)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electromagnetic Radiation
  • Space Physics
CONT

The COS-B satellite will carry a single large experiment, capable of detecting gamma-rays with energies in excess of 20 MeV in order to study in detail the sources of extraterrestrial gamma radiation. The principal objectives of the study will be to investigate the angular structure of gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane, to measure the flux of the isotropic radiation from high galactic latitudes believed to be of extra-galactic origin, to examine known or postulated point sources of the radiation and to determine the energy spectra of all identified sources.

French

Domaine(s)
