National Museum of Canada : Name changed in Jan. 1927 from the Victoria Memorial Museum to the National Museum of Canada. On Apr. 1, 1968 an act was promulgated to establish a corporation for the administration of the national museums of Canada(National Museums of Canada). Under this corporation the National Museum of Canada ceased to be and its work is continued and augmented by the National Museum of Man, the National Museum of Natural Sciences, the National Museum of Science and Technology, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum, the National Aeronautical Collection, and the Canadian Conservation Institute.

Victoria Memorial Museum: Name changed in 1920 from the Museum of the Geological Survey of Canada, although the name Victoria Memorial Museum appeared on some publications before that date. Name changed again January 1927 to National Museum of Canada.

In 1916, Sir Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, a Canadian who had settled in England, took it upon himself to form a committee that would oversee the creation of an official pictorial record of Canada's effort in the First World War, to be known as the Canadian War Memorials. A similar undertaking was initiated by H. O. McCurry, the director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1939 to 1955, to record the Canadian military presence in the Second World War, resulting in what would be known as the Canadian War Records Collection. A monumental building to house the two war collections, designed by the British architect E. A. Rickards, was also proposed, but the ambitious project was never realized. By 1950 the combined collections from the two wars numbered over 5, 000 works. The majority of them were transferred to the Canadian War Museum in 1971.
