On beech leaves you will often come across elongate, lemon-shaped structures, which are at first green and later turn yellow or red; there are usually several on one leaf. These are galls whose formation is induced by the female Beech Gall-midge(Mikiola fagi) and each contains a developing larva. The tiny imago flies very early in the spring.... 1, record 1, English, - beech%20gall%2Dmidge

1, record 4, Spanish, - carb%C3%B3n%20del%20ma%C3%ADz

Like other smut diseases, common smut of corn derives its name from the sooty masses of teliospores found on infected host plants... The most obvious symptoms are tumor-like galls that vary in size from less than 1 cm to more than 30 cm(0. 4-12 inch) in diameter. All meristematic tissues are susceptible to infection. Galls are found most frequently on ears, tassels, stalks, nodal shoots, and mid-ribs of leaves... Even though galls may form on many above-ground parts of the plant, infection is local(i. e., the host is not colonized systemically). Occasionally, galls develop beneath the soil surface when the apical meristem of a young plant is infected. 6, record 6, English, - corn%20smut

Grape phylloxera, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae(Fitch) is an insect pest which attacks many grape species both wild and cultivated. During feeding, phylloxera secrete a chemical which causes plant tissue to grow near the feeding site, resulting in the characteristic galls. Phylloxera is an indirect pest of grapes, damaging vines by feeding on plant sap from roots, leaves and tendrils, but not causing actual fruit injury. It is often described as an "aphid-like", sucking insect or a "vine louse". 6, record 9, English, - grape%20phylloxera

4, record 9, French, - phyllox%C3%A9ra%20de%20la%20vigne

The life cycle of phylloxera Daktulospaira vitifoliae(Fitch) on the grapevine. The active root stage of the insect is known as the radicole and its feeding results in the formation of nodosity and tuberosity root swellings. Several parthenogenic female radicole generations are produced during the active growth of the vine. Crawlers of the radicole form migrate above and below ground to the roots of other vines.-The overwintering root form is called a hibernant and does not feed.... The egg of the fundatrix hatches into the gallicole female, which forms additional galls and several more parthenogenic generations are produced during the active growth of the vine. According to Laurent Lesage, entomologist with Agriculture Canada, the common term "gall fly" could refer to any insect, not necessarily a "fly" in the true sense of the term, which produces galls in a specific plant. If the recipient of the French translation of this term requires a more "down-to-earth" equivalent, he or she may opt for "mouche du chardon" or "mouche des fruits", depending on the host plant of the insect. If however he or she prefers a more generic term with a scientific flavour, then "téphrite des tiges" or "téphrite gallicole" would be used. Caution must be exercised when the author of the English text is referring to a species in particular(usually the Latin term is provided, e. g. Europhora cardui), in which case a suitable French equivalent would be "téphrite du chardon" or even "mouche du chardon"(depending on the linguistic level dictated by the text), "chardon"(thistle) being the preferred host-plant of this species. Only the Latin term is official; none of the French or English terms are. 2, record 16, English, - gall%20fly
