Wind Shields. SRGs are sometimes installed in locations where wind effects which reduce gage catch can not be reduced by site selection. In such cases, use of a wind shield may be advisable, particularly at stations subject to excessive snowfall. Two type of shields have had wide use in the United States. They are the Nipher Shield, a flared metal device that attaches to the precipitation gage, and the Alter type which consists of 32 free swinging galvanized metal leaves, or baffles, attached to a steel ring 4 feet in diameter and supported by 3 or 4 galvanized pipes. One of the quadrants of the Alter's ring is hinged to allow for easy, safe access to the gage. These shields can be used on the SRG or Recording Rain gages. The installed shield's leaves should extend 1/2 inch above the level plane of the orifice.

Up to now, welding two different metals such as steel and aluminum has been a difficult task. Mazda tackles it by optimizing the rotating tool shape and joining characteristics, and by using galvanized steel on one side. A joining gun holds the parts from both sides, and then spins while force is applied. This generates frictional heat that subsequently joins the aluminum materials to the steel sheet metal. Grain and Feed Bins and Pits. Grain bins are similar to silos except they are usually shorter, wider and made of galvanized steel. They are used to store small grains, and can be fitted with dryers to remove moisture from the grain. Grain pits are less common on the farm. A grain pit is a recess in the ground made of concrete, steel or both. They are covered with a metal grate that allows vehicles to drive over the top and dump grain through the grate into the pit. Grain is usually removed from the pit by an auger conveyor or a high-speed vertical bucket conveyor called a grain leg. Both of these types of structures create a number of specific hazards.

Most steel manufacturers supply prefabricated module tank panels for quick on-site erection by relatively unskilled labour. A new concept in steel storages is called the Lipp tank which utilizes a continuous coil of aluminized or galvanized steel rolled upwards into a spiral to form the tank wall.
