Psychological dependence can be described as a compulsion or a craving to continue to take the substance because of the need for stimulation, or because it relieves anxiety or depression. Psychological dependence is recognized as the most widespread and the most important form of dependence. This kind of dependence is not only attributed to the use of psychoactive drugs, but also to food, sex, gambling, relationships or physical activities.

Subject field(s)
  • Mental Disorders
  • Drugs and Drug Addiction
  • Human Behaviour
  • Clinical Psychology
CONT

Addiction is a pervasive repetition of behavior that continues despite associated consequences. Individuals struggling with addiction experience uncontrollable urges or cravings to engage in problematic substance use or behaviors(e. g., gambling, stealing, spending, sex, etc.). Thoughts become obsessive, ultimately leading toward compulsions to satisfy them.

OBS

addiction: The word "addiction" is sometimes considered stigmatizing.

OBS

Not to be confused with "dependence," which refers to the reliance on a particular substance or behaviour to function normally.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Troubles mentaux
  • Drogues et toxicomanie
  • Comportement humain
  • Psychologie clinique
CONT

Tolerance(the need for more and more of a substance to get the same effect) can... be physiological and psychological. Physiological tolerance results from the repeated effects on the brain from daily doses of drugs such as alcohol, methamphetamines, nicotine opioids. Brain neural circuitry involving dopamine neurons adapts to the addition of the drug and reduces the responsiveness of the dopamine receptors... Psychological tolerance is the need for more of the substance to get the same sense of euphoria. Without some kind of system to "beat the house," you could not reasonably expect to earn a profit. However, Professor Smith said that he knew of no system that could "beat the house" in sports lottery parlay games. Gambling practice of determining odds and receiving and paying off bets on the outcome of sporting events(particularly horse races), political contests, and other competitions.

CONT

Horse racing is perhaps most closely associated with bookmaking, but boxing, baseball, football, basketball, and other sports have also long been of interest to bookmakers ("bookies") and gamblers. Morning-line odds, established by legal bookmakers, are printed in the sports sections of newspapers throughout the U.S.

CONT

They learn about every aspect of bookmaking, including calculating bets, administration, customer service, business skills, managing staff, betting laws and company policies.

CONT

The Commission emphasized that the definition of the relevant geographical market depended not on the technical feasibility of retransmitting French sound and pictures throughout the Community, but on a number of other factors, such as the habits of bettors, the type of betting offered (totalizator or bookmaking) and the countries in which races were organized, in other words the structure of supply and demand, which was determined by the betting markets themselves and by the differences between the various national laws.

In sports arbitrage we are backing at long odds and selling at short odds, thereby locking in an instant profit or benefiting from a zero risk bet.

CONT

Technically, there is one way to guarantee that a profit is made from a fixed odds sports bet-arbitrage.... This possibility arises because, by taking the best odds from different bookmakers, the punter can reduce the overround on the book to below 0%. The book for the punter is then said to be "overbroke" and the betting opportunity is known as an arbitrage, sure win or sure bet.... No form of gambling is entirely risk-free, not even arbitrage. [The] fact that it is frequently and wrongly acclaimed as being so is perhaps partly due to the use of the term "sure win".

The ring enclosed by the 12-foot and the 8-foot circles (called "outer ring") is blue and the one enclosed by the 4-foot and the 2-foot circles (called "inner ring" or "inside ring"), red, which leaves uncolored the ring enclosed by the 8-foot and the 4-foot circles (called "middle ring") and the inside of the 2-foot circle (called "tee" or "button"), giving them a white appearance. Seen from above, the house appears as a series of three rings, blue, white and red around a white button.

OBS

The term "circle" refers, more properly, to each of the four circular lines forming the house while the term "ring" refers to the coloured or uncoloured surface between two circles. But since there are four circles and four inner surfaces, the terms tend to be used as synonyms, as are "concentric ring(s)" and "concentric circle(s)." The centre of the house being a full circle and not a ring, there is a mix as to what is really the "inner circle": the red ring or the button?
