Instrumental neutron activation analysis(INAA) is used to determine the concentration of trace and major elements in a variety of matrices. A sample is subjected to a neutron flux and radioactive nuclides are produced. As these radioactive nuclides decay, they emit gamma rays whose energies are characteristic for each nuclide. Comparison of the intensity of these gamma rays with those emitted by a standard permit a quantitative measure of the concentrations of the various nuclides. 2, record 10, English, - instrumental%20neutron%20activation%20analysis

After the depleted fuel assemblies are removed from the reactor, they are placed in a canister … The canister alone, however, is not sufficient to provide adequate gamma or neutron radiation shielding. Therefore, apparatus that provide additional radiation shielding are required during transport, preparation and subsequent dry storage … The additional shielding is achieved by placing the canisters within large cylindrical containers called casks. Casks are typically designed to shield the environment from the dangerous radiation in two ways. First, shielding of gamma radiation requires large amounts of mass. Gamma rays are best absorbed by materials with a high atomic number and a high density, such as concrete, lead, and steel. The greater the density and thickness of the blocking material, the better the absorption/shielding of the gamma radiation. 1, record 16, English, - blocking%20material

The word radiation is commonly used in several distinct although related senses.-First, it is a term for the process by which energy is transferred and is able to exert an effect at a distance without the need for any physical connection between source and receiver. In this broad sense, radiation includes energy transfer both by electromagnetic waves(as in the case of gamma rays, ultra-violet rays or radio waves) and by energetic particles(such as alpha or beta particles emitted from nuclei in the process of radioactive decay). The more precise terms "electromagnetic radiation" and "particulate radiation" differentiate between these two phenomena. 2, record 29, English, - corpuscular%20radiation

5, record 29, French, - rayonnement%20corpusculaire
Record number: 29, Textual support number: 2 OBS
3, record 29, French, - rayonnement%20corpusculaire

A radioisotope is a specific type of radioactive substance; a radioisotope is a radioactive isotope of an element. The boron-lined compensated ionization chamber is a differential chamber [i. e. connected in electrical opposition] formed by three electrodes which define two elementary chambers. The first elementary chamber is located between the positive high voltage polarization electrode and the signal electrode which collects the charges developed by ionization in the gas. The surfaces of the electrodes of this elementary chamber are covered with a boron lining. This elementary chamber is therefore sensitive to neutrons and to gamma rays. The second elementary chamber is located between the signal electrode and the compensation electrode which receives a negative polarization voltage. As this elementary chamber has no boron lining, it is sensitive to gamma rays only. 1, record 36, English, - differential%20chamber

2, record 55, French, - dose%20dans%20l%27air

The first elementary chamber is located between the positive high voltage polarization electrode and the signal electrode which collects the charges developed by ionization in the gas. The surfaces of the electrodes of this elementary chamber are covered with a boron lining. This elementary chamber is therefore sensitive to neutrons and to gamma rays. 1, record 57, English, - boron%2Dlined%20compensated%20ionization%20chamber

The method by which incident radiation interacts with the medium to cause ionization may be direct or indirect. Electromagnetic radiations(X rays and gamma photons) are indirectly ionizing; that is, they give up their energy in various interactions with cellular molecules, and the energy is then utilized to produce a fast-moving charged particle such as an electron. It is the electron that then secondarily may react with a target molecule. Charged particles, in contrast, strike the tissue or medium and directly react with target molecules, such as oxygen or water. These particulate radiations are directly ionizing radiations. 1, record 76, English, - gamma%20photon

The nuclear process that powers the sun. It involves the fusion of nuclei in 3 kinds of collisions. The cycle starts for any one proton when it collides with another. This collision produces a deuterium nucleus, a neutrino that shoots off into space and a position that eventually annihilates a stray electron. Next, the deuterium nucleus is hit by another proton, producing a nucleus of helium-3 and a burst of gamma rays. The helium-3 hits another helium-3, producing a nucleus of inert helium and two protons. These 2 protons now start the proton-proton cycle over again. 4, record 92, English, - proton%2Dproton%20chain

Anything it seems, to avoid using the dreaded words, nuclear radiation, for that is what gamma rays are.(Source : The Guardian, 6 Jan. 1987, p. 23). 1, record 96, English, - radura

gamma-gamma log : A "gamma-ray log" that records the intensity of induced gamma rays emitted by a subsurface formation as a result of gamma-ray bombardment. It is obtained by lowering into a borehole a source that emits gamma rays and a detector(shielded from the source) that receives signals indicative of the gamma rays scattered back to it from the surrounding rocks. 3, record 99, English, - gamma%2Dgamma%20logging
