An instrument for determining the energy distribution of gamma rays. 5, record 1, English, - gamma%2Dray%20spectrometer
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Gamma rays are electromagnetic radiation at the short-wavelength, or high-frequency, end of the electromagnetic(EM) spectrum, which ranges from gamma rays(short) to radio(long). The study and analysis of gamma-ray spectra for scientific and technical use is called gamma spectroscopy, and gamma-ray spectrometers are the instruments which observe and collect such data. Because the energy of each photon of EM radiation is proportional to its frequency, gamma rays have sufficient energy that they are typically observed by counting individual photons. 2, record 1, English, - gamma%2Dray%20spectrometer

The planar detector consists of a crystal of either rectangular or circular cross section and a sensitive thickness of 1-20 mm... The electric field is perpendicular to the cross-sectional area of the crystal. The crystal thickness is selected on the basis of the gamma-ray energy region relevant to the application of interest, with the small thicknesses optimum for low-energy measurements(for example in the L-x-ray region for special nuclear material). Planar detectors usually achieve the best energy resolution, because of their low capacitance; they are preferred for detailed spectroscopy, such as the analysis of the complex low-energy gamma-ray and x-ray spectra of uranium and plutonium. 1, record 3, English, - planar%20detector

2, record 3, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20planaire
