Essentially, the basic mechanism of a GAO graph is that of a production system, with the advantages of the finely grained formalism of production rules. But this production system is interpreted with a goal stack of interspersed AND and OR goals that provide the representation with an explicit control structure. In addition, some notion of scope is afforded by a focus of attention that can be shifted with the generation of subgoals. 1, record 1, English, - GAO%20graph

The mechanism used by Brown and VanLehn for simplifying or distorting a procedure represented as a GAO graph is that of deleting rules : the deletion principle. The absence of one rule causes the interpreter to fire another one instead-usually, but not always, leading to an impasse. If no impasse is reached, the bug generated is a repairless one, and is equivalent to the type generated in models based on syntactic manipulations. If an impasse is reached, the stage is set for a repair. 1, record 2, English, - deletion%20principle
