In LiDAR [light detection and ranging], a data void is a gap in the point cloud coverage, caused by surface non-reflectance of the LiDAR pulse, instrument or processing anomalies or failure, obstruction of the LiDAR pulse, or improper collection flight planning.

OBS

Any area greater than or equal to four times the aggregate nominal pulse spacing (ANPS) squared, measured using first returns only, is considered to be a data void.

1991 August. Meteosat-3 was moved to 50°W in anticipation of a gap in the coverage normally provided by USA satellites. This was the start of the European Atlantic Data Coverage(ADC) project to ensure continuity of vital data over the western Atlantic and was seen as a reciprocal arrangement for the early actions of the USA in support of the Meteosat DCS mission.
