A low-elevation wind associated with gaps or low elevation areas in mountainous terrain, including flow through valleys and canyons and among peaks. 2, record 2, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Gap winds can range in width from hundreds of feet to over one hundred miles, and in unusual circumstances can be associated with strong winds exceeding 50 knots. These winds are normally quite shallow, extending hundreds of feet to a few thousand feet above the surface, with large changes of wind, or wind shear, at their upper and lateral boundaries. Gap winds are generally strongest when there is a large pressure drop across a gap, although there is one class of gap wind that does not depend on a pressure gradient across the gap. 3, record 2, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Although physicially plausible, the venturi mechanism appears to be at odds with most real gap wind situations, where the strongest winds are generally over the exit region of the gap, not at the narrowest section or constriction. There are a number of reasons for the failure of the funnel model. First, there is no rigid lid in the real world. ... Another reason the flow tend to be strongest in the gap exit region is that there is often a synoptic or mesoscale pressure gradient across the gap. 4, record 2, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
[The term "gap wind"] was introduced by R. S. Scorer (1952) for the surface winds blowing through the Strait of Gibraltar. ... Similar winds occur at other gaps in mountain ranges, such as the tehuantepecer and the jochwinde, and in long channels, such as the Strait of Juan de Fuca between the Olympic Mountains of Washington and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. 5, record 2, English, - gap%20wind

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 3 OBS

In the STM [scanning tunneling microscope] the "aperture" is a tiny tungsten probe, its tip ground so fine that it may consist of only a single atom and measure just. 2 nanometer in width. Piezoelectric controls maneuver the tip to within a nanometer or two of the surface of a conducting specimen so close that the electron clouds of the atom at the probe tip and of the nearest atom of the specimen overlap. When a small voltage is applied to the tip, electrons "tunnel" across the gap, generating a minuscule tunneling current. The strength of the current is exquisitely sensitive to the width of the gap; typically it decreases by a factor of 10 each time the gap is widened by. 1 nanometer-half the diameter of an atom. 2, record 5, English, - tunneling%20current

1, record 6, French, - pointe

The top roll of a pair is carried in fixed bearings but the bottom roll is supported by pivot arms which may be adjusted to vary the gap between the rolls. Adjusting the gap gives different degrees of grinding. Two smaller diameter rolls, called feed rolls, are set above the grinding rolls. The purpose of the feed rolls is to regulate the stream of material passing to the nip of the grinding rolls. A balanced feed gate ensures even distribution of stock along the full width of the rolls. 1, record 12, French, - cylindre%20de%20broyage

The curtain coater comes in two types :(1) pressure head and(2) gravity feed. The pressure head is essentially a V-shaped reservoir made airtight by a removable cover and fitted across the bottom with an adjustable gap. A variable-speed, positive-displacement pump sends adhesive into the reservoir. Spread control is determined by the width of the knife gap, the pump speed, and the viscosity of the glue... The gravity feed system is the forerunner of the pressure head. The application method is quite similar, with one important difference : the curtain velocity cannot be controlled. The curtain falls as a waterfall, the weight controlled by mass and height. 1, record 16, English, - curtain%20coater

1, record 16, French, - encolleuse%20%C3%A0%20rideau
