Technically speaking, the bokashi method is a form of fermentation rather than composting—while composting decomposes waste and results in matter ready to be added to a garden, bokashi ferments(or pickles) food and results in matter still too acidic to be added to plants. That's why the final stage of bokashi composting is to add the bokashi matter to a compost bin or fallow spot in the garden. In short, bokashi is a way to quickly ferment food scraps so that they can be composted faster.

You actually don’t need any special equipment, you can just set up a heap in the back of your garden, though if you want something a bit more contained(and more aesthetically pleasing) you can buy a compost bin.

The power of composting to reduce society's dependence on landfills and create valuable products for the garden and other soil enhancement uses is being celebrated during International Compost Awareness Week(May 7-13, 2006). What started off as a Canadian initiative in 1995 has now become an international event which is being promoted throughout Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Europe and for the first time, Australia, this week.
