Subject field(s)
  • Natural Gas and Derivatives
  • White Products (Petroleum)
DEF

Low-boiling liquid petroleum product extracted from natural gas. [Definition standardized by ISO.]

CONT

absorption process : A method of treating wet gas by passing it through an absorber in which large surfaces of mineral seal oil or a similar oil are exposed and absorb the heaviest fraction of the gas. This is later distilled from the oil and is known as casing-head gasoline.

OBS

[These] liquid hydrocarbons ... are extracted from casinghead gas.

OBS

In its "wild" or unstabilized condition, it contains fairly high proportions of propane and butane. The removal of the propane yields a stabilized gasoline.

OBS

Not to be confused with "natural gas."

OBS

natural gasoline; casing head gasoline: terms standardized by ISO.

OBS

OBS

essence naturelle : terme normalisé par l'ISO.

CONT

Solar Thermal Propulsion(STP)... uses large area deployable concentrators to focus the Sun's energy on a small heat exchanger, called an absorber, which is cooled by hydrogen gas propellant. The absorber transfers the concentrated heat energy from the Sun to the hydrogen gas. As the gas is heated, it expands and is directed outward through a nozzle. This expanding gas provides enough thrust in the microgravity environment of low earth orbit to transfer the vehicle to a higher energy, geosynchronous orbit around the Earth where the satellite operates.

Subject field(s)
  • Anti-pollution Measures
DEF

To eliminate a pollution problem.

CONT

The United States has made tremendous advances in the past 25 years to clean up the aquatic environment by controlling pollution from industries and sewage treatment plants. Unfortunately, we did not do enough to control pollution from diffuse, or nonpoint, sources.

CONT

add-on control device : An air pollution control device such as carbon absorber or incinerator which reduces the pollution in an exhaust gas. The control device usually does not affect the process being controlled and thus is "add-on" technology, as opposed to a scheme to control pollution through making some alteration to the basic process.

CONT

Risk management is the process of taking information from various sources ... and using it to make regulatory (decisions) about what actions should or will be taken to control pollution or remediate waste sites.

OBS

to control pollution: this expression is loosely applied to the limitating, reducing or removing of pollution and is used when environmental quality objectives are met. See also "pollution abatement" and "pollution control" in TERMIUM.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures antipollution
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Petroleum Distillation
DEF

To recover liquid hydrocarbons from natural or refinery gas in a gas-absorption plant. The wet gas enters the absorber at the bottom and rises to the top, encountering a stream of absorption oil(a light oil or similar fraction) traveling downward over bubble-cap trays. The lighter fraction removes, or absorbs, the heavier liquid hydrocarbons from the wet gas.

Subject field(s)
  • Climate Change
DEF

An atmospheric gas which, like nitrogen or hydrogen, does not contribute to the global warming, or which, at very least, does so only indirectly, like carbon monoxide.

CONT

Sagan and Mullen suggested that ammonia(NH3), an efficient absorber of infrared, could have warmed the climate if the gas represented just 100 out of every million molecules of the air. Subsequent studies have shown, however, that the sun would have rapidly converted ammonia into the nongreenhouse gases nitrogen and hydrogen unless it was continually resupplied to the atmosphere from the plant's surface.

Key term(s)
  • non greenhouse gas

French

Domaine(s)
  • Changements climatiques
DEF

CONT

To maximize isotopic exchange, it is very important that the [hydrogen sulphide] in the units be maintained at a very high purity(99. 5%). Unfortunately, the natural water, although treated, still contains small quantities of dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and other gases. If not removed continuously, these gases would accumulate and decrease the [hydrogen sulphide] purity. A continuous gas purge is drawn from the top of each firs stage cold tower and send to the purge tower where the [hydrogen sulphide] is absorbed by the incoming water. The gaseous impurities proceed from the purge tower to the absorber where any remaining [hydrogen sulphide] is absorbed. The gases, essentially [hydrogen sulphide] free, are then flared. The flare is used in this case to burn any [hydrogen sulphide] that might not have been absorbed.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Distillation du pétrole
OBS
