The Gas Analyzer System for Metabolic Analysis Physiology (GASMAP) device is used to monitor and analyze inhaled and exhaled breath streams to determine their gas concentrations. The primary gases of interest are nitrogen (N²), oxygen (O²), carbon dioxide (CO²), argon (Ar), acetylene (C²H²), sulfur hexafluoride (SF⁶), helium (He), and carbon monoxide (C¹⁸ O). The GASMAP flight hardware consists of two components: an analyzer module and a calibration module, both of which are housed in drawers inside Spacelab. In thermal conductivity analysers, a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit measures the imbalance caused by passing gas over detector filaments, using half of the cells for the fumigant air mixture and the other half for air as a control. This analyser, in a portable form, is commonly used to check for methyl bromide in ship holds, but it can also be calibrated for other gases. TAGA. The Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyser was developed at the University of Toronto and SCIEX Ltd. The device uses a quadrapole mass spectrometer in continuous operational mode. System sensitivity is high(ppt levels), selectivity for various pollutants is good, and can be used in a mobile environment. EPS is evaluating the device for a monitoring role. The system is quite expensive(well over $100, 000) and requires a high level of expertise to operate.
