Surface Area Measurement. For nanopowder, the B.E.T. method is commonly used to determine the specific surface area. The drop in nitrogen pressure in a closed container due to adsorption of the nitrogen molecules to the surface of the material inserted in the container is measured. (The shape of the nanopowder particles is assumed to be spherical.) 4, record 14, English, - Brunauer%26ndash%3BEmmett%26ndash%3BTeller%20method

... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface : the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett's work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination. 1, record 14, English, - Brunauer%26ndash%3BEmmett%26ndash%3BTeller%20method

Solar Thermal Propulsion(STP)... uses large area deployable concentrators to focus the Sun's energy on a small heat exchanger, called an absorber, which is cooled by hydrogen gas propellant. The absorber transfers the concentrated heat energy from the Sun to the hydrogen gas. As the gas is heated, it expands and is directed outward through a nozzle. This expanding gas provides enough thrust in the microgravity environment of low earth orbit to transfer the vehicle to a higher energy, geosynchronous orbit around the Earth where the satellite operates. 2, record 36, English, - solar%20thermal%20propulsion

A packed tower scrubber removes soluble and noxious gases, and mists with droplet sizes greater than 5 µm, from gas streams. Contaminant gases, such as hydrochloric acid, sulphur dioxide and ammonia vapour, are made to flow through a bed packed with media. The media can be plastic, ceramic or stainless steel rings or saddles, designed to provide a high surface area yet allow a high throughput. A scrubbing liquor is pumped through the bed, intimately mixes with the gas stream and dissolves the contaminant gases. 2, record 38, English, - scrubbing%20liquid

Andersen 2000 Inc and Montair Andersen bv have been responsible for many of today's standards in the area of scrubber technology. Not only do we manufacture complete packaged scrubbing systems for all types of industrial applications, we also design and manufacture scrubbers for applications including fine particulate removal, gas absorption, and dust and large particulate matter collection.... Some of the scrubber technologies available from Andersen are Venturi Scrubbers, Packed Bed Scrubbers, Ejector Scrubbers, Triven Scrubbers, and Low Energy Scrubbers. These systems all use liquid as part of the scrubbing process. And as a result, they are referred to as "Wet Scrubbers".... A rocket engine is a device in which propellants are burned in a combustion chamber and the resulting high pressure gases are expanded through a specially shaped nozzle to produce thrust. The function of the nozzle is to convert the chemical-thermal energy generated in the combustion chamber into kinetic energy. The nozzle converts the slow moving, high pressure, high temperature gas in the combustion chamber into high velocity gas of lower pressure and temperature. Gas velocities from 2 to 4. 5 kilometers per second can be obtained in rocket nozzles. The nozzles which perform this feat are called DeLaval nozzles(after the inventor) and consist of a convergent and divergent section. The minimum flow area between the convergent and divergent section is called the nozzle throat. The flow area at the end of the divergent section is called the nozzle exit area. 6, record 40, English, - divergent%20exit%20cone

A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range. 2, record 41, English, - colloid%20chemistry

SPI, or Sediment Profile Imagery, is an innovative and cost efficient method of surveying and/or monitoring lake or marine aquatic environments with a view to establishing the environmental status of these habitats or as part of a site suitability study.... SPI is based on single lens reflex(SLR) camera photography and computer-based image analysis which greatly accelerates the time required to write reports and provide relevant data to the client/legislator in a matter of weeks. SPI technology can readily quantify over 20 physical, chemical and biological parameters including : sediment grain size; prism penetration; surface pelletal layer; sediment surface relief; mud clasts; redox area; redox contrast; current apparent redox boundary; relict redox boundaries; methane gas vesicles; apparent faunal dominants; voids; burrows; surface features(e. g. worm tubes, epifauna, shell) ;dredged material; microbial aggregations; and successional stage. 1, record 42, English, - sediment%20profile%20imagery

Kibo's Debris Shield. The International Space Station(ISS) wall is designed to protect the ISS and its crew from space debris. A debris shield is adopted for this particular purpose. A famous astronomer, Fred Whipple, devised this shield, so it is called a Whipple Shield. The idea is to attach a layer of thin aluminum plate outside the wall. When a space debris impacts this outer plate, the kinetic energy of the space debris is converted to heat. This heat creates a hole in the outer plate. However, the debris will evaporate or disintegrate to small particles consisting of gas, liquid and solids and will no longer be able to significantly damage the wall.... a stuffed-shield is adopted on the wall of the front side of Kibo, covering an area of 150 degrees. A stuffed shield binds several kinds of textile layers similar to a bulletproof vest between itself and the wall. This is a reinforced Whipple shield. 2, record 44, English, - debris%20shield

The lack of margins in selectivity and the sensitivity of etching rates to other variables such as loading(i. e., the total area to be etched) in plasma etching have made it necessary to develop a positive means of determining the moment etching should stop, rather than relying of fixed times. Most end-point detectors developed to date are based on gas analysis of one sort or another. They determine the instant that either the material being etched has largely disappeared or the material beneath that layer is being attacked. A non profit organization created in 1994, has as its mission implementing the National Earth Comfort Program. The National Earth Comfort Program is a collaborative effort between the US Department of Energy, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and private sector organizations interested in promoting the growth of energy-efficient, environmentally friendly heating and cooling technology. The GHPC' s specific area of interest is in increasing the use of GeoExchange technology for both commercial and residential heating and cooling. GeoExchange systems use the earth's renewable energy to provide heating in winter, and cooling in summer, with energy consomption 25% to 50% less than traditional oil, natural gas, and electric heat pump systems. Moreover because GeoExchange systems burn no fossil fuels in creating heat, they reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially, and eliminate a source of carbon monoxide inside the homes and commercial buildings where they’re used. 1, record 53, English, - Geothermal%20Heat%20Pump%20Consortium

Cold cracking occurs after the weld metal solidification is complete. Cold cracking may occur several days after welding and is generally caused by hydrogen embrittlement, excessive joint restraint, and rapid cooling. The process of through-drying... Essentially, a hot, unsaturated gas is passed through a wet, porous material(e. g., the tissue web) by imposing a pressure differential across the material. As the hot gas passes through, heat is transferred to evaporate the water, and the gas leaves at a reduced temperature and with increased water vapor content. The intimate contact between the hot gas and the web, coupled with the large internal surface area of the porous material, produces exceptionally high drying rates. 1, record 70, English, - through%2Ddryer

Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house. 1, record 80, English, - forced%20air%20wood%20furnace
