Continuous driving, such as on the interstate, does not offer the regenerative braking system [of hybrid vehicles] an opportunity to energize the battery. It is during stop-and-go driving that hybrids benefit most from this system, often resulting in a significantly higher gas mileage(MPG) rating during city driving than on the highway. The regenerative braking system also makes hybrids ideal for delivery vehicles and city transit buses that operate in stop-and-go conditions all day long. 2, record 3, English, - stop%2Dand%2Dgo%20driving

The oxygen sensor(also known as an O2 sensor, lambda sensor, or EGO sensor) is one of the most critical sensors on a fuel-injected engine. It resembles a spark plug and is located in the exhaust manifold between the turbo and catalytic converter. When at operating temperature it becomes a miniature battery which generates a voltage based on the differential between the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and the oxygen content of the ambient air. By this method it measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, allowing the ECM to compensate to some degree for various fuel grades, engine wear, altitude changes, usage of oxygenated fuel, and more. Another big benefit is the ability to keep emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and unburned hydrocarbons as low as possible. 3, record 6, English, - oxygen%20sensor

3, record 6, French, - sonde%20d%27oxyg%C3%A8ne%20des%20gaz%20d%27%C3%A9chappement

An idle-stop system, also commonly known as a start-stop system, is essentially what makes up today's increasingly popular so-called mild hybrids.... The battery in a mild hybrid is still very important, but its main purpose is as a part of the idle-stop system that shuts off the gasoline engine when a mild hybrid is at rest, coasting or slowing down. For instance, a stop at a red light at an intersection will cause the engine to cut off. When the car is idle, no gas will burn inside the engine. Once the light turns green and the driver applies pressure to the gas pedal, the engine should switch back on seamlessly, as though it hadn’t been turned off at all. 1, record 8, English, - idle%2Dstop%20system

Proration is an accounting system where the total actual monthly battery production is equitably distributed among wells in the battery. This system is applicable when the production of wells producing to a battery is commingled before separation and measurement, and each well' s monthly production is initially estimated, based on the well test data... In the case of an oil proration battery, the oil, gas, and water produced by individual wells is not continuously measured. Instead, the wells are periodically tested to determine the production rates of oil, gas and water. The rates determined during the well test are used to estimate the well' s production for the time period beginning with the well test and continuing until another test is conducted. The estimated monthly production so determined for each well is totaled to arrive at the battery's total monthly estimated production. 2, record 9, English, - proration%20battery

A PAPR, powered air purifying respirator, is a positive air system that uses a battery to power a blower, which then pumps air through a filter into a mask or a hood. The blower, battery and filters are usually belt-worn, and connected to the hood or mask by a breathing tube. The clean, filtered, cool air flows into the breathing zone. The airflow is much higher than the wearer needs to breathe, and the excess flow creates a positive pressure as it passes through the mask. This pressure pushes out, and keeps contamination from leaking in. This is different from a normal gas mask, which uses the wearer's lung power to pull air through a filter. There are three types of respiratory protection: air-purifying respirators ["filtrants," "à purification d’air" or "à épuration d’air"], supplied-air respirators ["à adduction d’air"] and self-contained breathing apparatus ["autonome"]. Air-purifying respirators clean contaminated air before it is inhaled by passing the air through a cleansing media such as a mechanical filter, cartridge or filter/cartridge combination. The air is passed through the cleansing media by breathing or by a blower. These latter are called powered air-purifying respirators. 7, record 10, English, - powered%20air%2Dpurifying%20respirator

The Get Away Special(GAS) Program was initiated by NASA in the mid-seventies to provide a diverse user community with extremely low cost access to space. Since 1982, 157 GAS payloads have flown aboard the STS. In 1998 alone, 16 GAS payloads flew on 5 different STS missions. The GAS carrier consists of a canister(5 ft3) which can accommodate customer equipment in a volume 19. 75 inches in diameter and 28. 25 inches high. The customer equipment can weigh up to 200 lbs. and attaches to the canister top plate. A smaller(2. 5 ft3) canister is also available for 60 and 100 lb. payloads. Electrical connection is via customer supplied cables to the GAS electrical interface on the canister bottom plate. Bumpers on the customer equipment provide lateral support. Provisions are made for insertion of purge gas into the canister and for venting a customer battery box. 3, record 13, English, - get%20away%20special%20payload
