Few modern pesticides are usable in the technical form. Generally, the chemical is extended or diluted, thereby enabling a more economic coverage of the area or a reduction in the possibility of damage to vegetation. This is usually done by mixing the technical material with a neutral carrier. With the difference frequency between oscillators adjusted to zero with pure carrier gas flowing through the detector, the presence of a foreign vapor in the cell will produce a different frequency which is linearly related to the amount of material introduced through an injection port in the carrier gas stream and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature for a given component at a constant density or concentration in the cell and for a particular operating frequency. 2, record 13, English, - Clapp%20oscillator

Two main types of sample splitter are in common use, known as calibrated lead devices, and dividing valves. Most of these are based upon the principle that the head of the capillary column constitutes only a small proportion of the total outlet from the sample injection block. As the carrier gas enters the block it carries a small amount of the sample into the capillary column while the remainder is vented away through a larger opening. This can be done by having the capillary column held at the axis of a circular hole in the injection block, or by having it forming a narrow arm of a T-or Y-piece at the column head. In either case the amount going into the capillary column can often be further regulated by means of a tapered needle control. 1, record 19, English, - sample%20splitter

An instrument which responds to density changes in the gas stream, directly related to the molecular weights. Several forms of gas density balance have been developed since this type of detector was first introduced by Martin and James. Improvements in instrumentation have led to a revival of interest in it as a detector system suitable for molecular-weight studies. The density changes are measured by means of a form of U-tube, one limb of which contains pure carrier gas and the other column effluent gas. An anemometer situated between the two limbs detects and measures any density difference. Using nitrogen or argon carrier gas the limit of detection is 0. 4 μg, response is linear with concentration, and it can be used for molecular weight determinations for values below 200 and for percentage composition studies. 5, record 21, English, - gas%20density%20balance

5, record 37, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20%C3%A0%20ionisation%20d%27argon

Photoionization detector... consists of a chamber into which gases suitable for the discharge such as helium, argon, nitrogen, or hydrogen are introduced through [a] tube which serves as the cathode for the discharge. The ultraviolet radiation or glow discharge in the hollow cathode, maintained by a small current between the cathode and discharge anode, is sufficiently energetic to ionize components in the carrier gas effluent entering through the tube, the collecting electrode(anode) for the ions liberated within the chamber enclosed by the second cathode. 5, record 41, English, - photoionization%20detector

1, record 41, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20%C3%A0%20photoionisation

Semiconductive Thin Film Detector. Using the known principle that the adsorption and desorption of gases cause a change in electrical conductivity of semiconductors, Seiyama et al. developed a new chromatographic detector for gaseous components.... The current, depending upon the resistance of the film, is converted to voltage by the variable resistance, which is fed without amplification to a recorder. Resistance also adjusts the input voltage of the recorder at desired sensitivity. Using zinc oxide as an example of a typical film material, the conductivity of its film maintains a fixed value when the nitrogen carrier gas is passed at a constant flow rate throught the borosilicate glass tube. When a small amount of another gas or vapor is added to the carrier gas, its conductivity is changed. 1, record 47, English, - semiconductive%20thin%20film%20detector

A simple arrangement of two cavities in series showed the feasibility of detecting traces of one gas in another. A klystron was used to generate microwave power which was fed through a wave guide to a transmission-type cavity. Another cavity was mounted in series with and tuned to the same frequency as the first; both cavities were identical except that the second had a gas inlet and outlet ports. From this measuring cell, its microwave energy was sent to a crystal detector. By frequency-modulating the klystron with a 50-cps sine wave voltage on the repeller, a burst of energy passes to the detector each time the generator frequency equals that of the cavities. The detector current is amplified and measured with an oscilloscope. At the beginning of the run, the two cavities are filled with the nitrogen carrier gas and, if the composition in one of the cavities is changed, its electrical size will change... causing a decrease of current from the detector. 1, record 48, English, - crystal%20detector

Thermionic or Electron Impact Detector. In 1957, Ryce and Bryce described a sensitive ionization gauge based on the ionization potentials of vapors. It comprised a filament, a grid, and a plate. The potential difference between the filament and grid accelerated electrons which may ionize any gas in their path. If the grid potential is maintained at a level insufficient to ionize the helium carrier gas... no current flows in the plate circuit. If a potential difference of 18 V is maintained between the filament and the grid, compounds of lower ionization potential in the helium will be ionized and the positive ions produced will yield a cathode current, the current noted being a measure of the ion concentration. Into the modified ionizing chamber, operated at reduced pressure, a small fraction of the column effluent gas stream(less than 0. 5%) was allowed to flow into the gauge through a controlled leak. Over a 0. 02-l. 5 mm Hg pressure range, the sensitivity was approximately proportional to the pressure, and sensitivities in the range of 10[ minus superscript 12] mole were claimed. 1, record 55, English, - electron%20impact%20detector

In practice, heavy extraction is achieved by counter-current gas-liquid contact in a multi-stage arrangement of equipment which permits deuterium to be transferred in a cold system from gas to liquid, and in a hot system from liquid to gas. The hydrogen sulfide acts as a carrier to exchange and concentrate deuterium. 1, record 63, English, - counter%2Dcurrent%20gas%2Dliquid%20contact

1, record 63, French, - contact%20des%20phases%20gaz%2Dliquide%20%C3%A0%20contre%2Dcourant
