GAS CENTER [15 records]

Record 1 2021-07-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
CONT

Horizontal hydraulic fracturing is accomplished by drilling vertically to the depth of the shale formation, which is generally found between 0. 6 – 1. 5 km below the surface. When the gas-containing shale is intercepted, the drill bit is maneuvered to travel horizontally through the center of the formation for a distance of up to 1. 6km. Water, biocides, surfactants, sands, and other chemicals are forced into the borehole under extremely high pressure to induce fractures in the shale that allow gas to rise to the surface for collection...

OBS

The terms "fraccing" and "fracing," short for "fracturing," are pronounced "fracking."

Domaine(s)

DEF

  • Compressors

DEF

A type of compressor in which the flow of gas is caused to be moved radially away from the center, usually with a series of blades(called turbines), in order to be compressed. It is a type of nonpositive-displacement machine used in many application, including the transmission of natural gas through pipelines.

CONT

Dynamic-type compressors are machines in which air or gas is compressed by the mechanical action of rotating vanes or impellers imparting velocity and pressure to the air or gas. ... in a centrifugal compressor, flow is in a radial direction.

OBS

Centrifugal compressors are often arranged in series to achieve multistage compression.

Subject field(s)
  • Water Heaters and Softeners (Household)
CONT

Gas-fired water heaters have a gas burner located below the tank, a thermostatic switch, a gas valve and a pilot light. The thermostat will open the gas valve when it senses the water temperature at the bottom of the tank has dropped below the present limit. Gas flows to the burner and is ignited by the pilot light, heating the tank from below. In addition, the hot exhaust gases are vented through a hollow core in the center of the tank to help heat the water. The exhaust is then passed into the draft hood and to the vent connector where it is discharged to a chimney flue.

  • The Sun (Astronomy)
CONT

In 1962 a fundamentally new mode of gas motion in the solar atmosphere was discovered(...). This mode was most visible as a horizontal motion organized in large cells with the gas velocity directed outward from the center of each cell at about 0. 5 km/sec.(...) It was then hypothesized that these large cells were convective in nature, in the sense of hot gas rising at the center of a cell and cool gas falling at the periphery. This phenomenon is known as the "supergranulation".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Soleil (Astronomie)
CONT

Column chromatography. ... the first step in this process ... is to prepare a solution of the substances to the separated. This solution is then poured into the top of a column filled with finely divided material that can absorb differentially the substances to be separated. ... After the solution has moved down the column, the chromatogram is developed by elution, that is, by passing pure solvent down the column.

OBS

There are two general types of chromatographic techniques :"packed columns" which contain a granular adsorbent or a granular support material coated with a thin layer of high-boiling solvent(partitioning liquid) and "open-tubular columns" which contain a thin film of partitioning liquid on the column walls. An opening through the center of the column allows the passage of gas.
