GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS [5 records]

Record 1 2025-06-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Physics
  • Analytical Chemistry
CONT

GC is a common type of chromatography often used in chemical separations and analysis. GC can be defined as a chromatographic method in which the mobile phase is a gas.

OBS

In gas chromatography, the stationary phase can either be liquid or solid.

Key term(s)
  • vapour-phase chromatography
  • vapor-phase chromatography

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
  • Analytical Chemistry
DEF

Instrument used to monitor and quantify the products eluted from a chromatography column. Techniques used are based on the physical, chemical or biological properties of the molecules and may involve prior conversion by chemical or enzymic means to produce a coloured or fluorescent complex. Physical methods include the use of spectrophotometers, colorimeters, spectrophotofluorometers, refractometers, polarimeters, etc.

CONT

Biological molecules may be monitored using enzyme-linked reactions specific for the required class of compound. Such detectors often include a flow cell so that the fluid passes continuously from the column through the detector. Several types of detector have been developed specifically for use with gas/liquid chromatographs. These include flame ionization and electron capture devices or, where information is required on the exact structure of the compounds, a mass spectrometer. Many are linked to microprocessors for control of the chromatographic analysis, as well as direct computation of results.

... sampling into silica gel tube, 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine impregnated passive diffusion badge or filter cassette and subsequent gas chromatographic or high performance liquid chromatographic analysis provides more accurate determination of airborne glutaraldehyde concentration...

CONT

Nitschke et al (1998) analysed indoor nitrogen dioxide levels by selecting a cohort of 129 asthmatics and ensuring they wore diffusion badge monitors while indoor gas appliances are being used, which is seen as potentially the greatest period of exposure. Levels were expressed at time-average nitrogen dioxide concentration, because daily badge exposure times differed (mean 4.5 hours, sd 2.4).

CONT

The exposure of each child to nitrogen dioxide both at home and in the classroom was measured using passive diffusion badge monitors.

Kaye adapted a Beckman far-ultraviolet DK-2 spectrophotometer as a gas chromatographic effluent detector to record the spectra of eluted, absorbing materials. Using heated flow-through cells... coupled directly to the thermal conductivity cell' s outlet, he found that absorptivities of most organic vapors were sufficiently large to permit quantitative analysis, and in some instances identification, where specific absorption patterns could be attributed directly to a functional group in certain molecular species. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the far-ultraviolet detector for many compounds possessing intense absorption bands exceeds that of the normal thermal conductivity detector and, in some cases, the hydrogen flame ionization detector.
