English

Subject field(s)
  • Physics
  • Analytical Chemistry
CONT

GC is a common type of chromatography often used in chemical separations and analysis. GC can be defined as a chromatographic method in which the mobile phase is a gas.

OBS

In gas chromatography, the stationary phase can either be liquid or solid.

Key term(s)
  • vapour-phase chromatography
  • vapor-phase chromatography

French

Domaine(s)

  • Chimie analytique
CONT

DEF

A method by which a ... sample undergoes total combustion and the specific combustion products are measured to determine the total concentration of an element in the sample, e.g. sulfur.

CONT

The available standardized methods in the field of sulfur analysis are the Wickbold combustion method for total sulfur determination(ISO 4260) ;the Lingener combustion method for total sulfur determination(ISO 6326-5) ;gas chromatography for determination of individual sulfur compounds(ISO 19739) ;potentiometry for determination of hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide and thiol compounds(ISO 6326-3).

DEF

DEF

A method of analysis by which the components of a gas mixture are separated using gas chromatography.

OBS

The sample is passed in a stream of carrier gas through a column that has different retention properties relative to the components of interest. Different components pass through the column at different rates and are detected as they elute from the column at different times.

DEF

CONT

Although real-life gas chromatography analysis is a complex process depending on numerous factors such as molecular volume, chemical and physical properties, the form of the analyzed molecules, the temperature of the process, the adsorption abilities, other properties of the matrix, etc., the separation for many compounds depends on differences in boiling points.

Gas chromatography(GC). The use of GCs for detecting organics is rapidly becoming a standard technique in air pollution analysis.... GC systems are reliable, expensive and extremely sensitive.... Commercial GC systems are provided by many companies, and systems by Finnegan, Hewlett-Packard and Varian are among the better known. Commercial ambient monitoring GCs are made by Bendix(8200) and Beckman(6800) and are called Ambient Hydrocarbon Monitors. Total organic content of the air with and without methane is measured with GC-FID systems.

Filter Sampling. Particulates are extremely varied for their composition. The monitoring of particulates with High Volume(Hi-Vol) samplers and other filter media varies from a simple colorimetric measure of the coefficient of haze(CoH) to the use of neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, etc. for metal concentrations and gas chromatography for organic composition. Heavy metal measurements for lead, cadmium, chromium, vanadium, and nickel are common in urban areas such as with the National Air Pollution Surveillance Network(NAPS).
